New Year's Eve News in Miami Beach

Have you been participating in any of the Miami Beach New Year festivities?  There are lots of events going on in the barrier island, and the festivities started a little earlier this year when the Capital One Beach Bash kicked off yesterday.  The event was headlined by acts like American musician and DJ Ryan Lewis, rapper Macklemore, and American rock band Imagine Dragons, perhaps best known for their Billboard top ten hit “Radioactive”.  The free event serves as the perfect segue for all of the other events, parties, and festivities taking place tonight.

If you're planning on welcoming 2016 on Ocean Drive or plan on driving through it, be aware that a portion from 5th Street to 13th Street will remain closed to vehicles until 7 AM on January 3rd, so you may need to find parking at a nearby garage or alter your method of getting to your destination.  On the plus side, those who will be celebrating on Ocean Drive will have one less thing to worry about as the clock ticks closer to midnight tonight.

Also be aware that the popular pet spot Bark Beach Bark Beach at Collins Avenue between 80th and 81st streets will not be open tomorrow, New Year's Day.

Have a safe and happy New Year!  See you in 2016!

New Year's Events in Miami Beach

It's almost time to say goodbye to 2015, and there is arguably no better way to welcome 2016 than participating in one of the many New Year's Eve festivities set to take place in Miami Beach.  Here are a couple of highlights in case you've yet to make your plans and are trying to figure out where to go.

Musician and producer Questlove will be one of the headliners at the NYE 2016 event taking place at Basement Miami on Miami Beach's Collins Avenue.  He will be joined by DJs Jus Ke and Mateo Difontaine in an energetic celebration involving lots of dancing and even bowling courtesy of Basement's bowling lanes.

At the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, singer-songwriter The Weeknd will be performing alongside up and coming Norwegian DJ and producer Kygo.  The former is perhaps best known for his number one hits “Can't Feel My Face” and “The Hills” while the latter has managed to make the American charts with songs like “Stole the Show” and “Firestone”.

Best Fishing Spots This Week

Looking to go fishing during this last week of 2015?  Some of the best fishing spots in South Florida are just offshore of Miami Beach.  Let's take a look at a couple of spots where the fish are particularly active.

Over near the grass flats in South Bay, there's been quite the abundance of bait fish despite the relative lack of bonefishing.  Some of the fish that fishermen have caught include red grouper, mutton, yellowtail, and four-pound Spanish mackerel.

In the Keys, there has been lots of activity by large yellowtail and black grouper. In fact, most of the grouper that has been caught has been between 20 to 25 pounds.  Most of this fishing activity has been happening within 100 to 110 feet of water.

The best bet for fishing lately remains offshore of Miami Beach.  Kingfish, blackfin tuna, and bonitos are some of the frequently caught fish during offshore fishing trips as of late.  There has also been activity by mutton snappers and amberjacks.

Florida Fishermen Embrace Falling Gas Prices

A major contributor to the Florida economy is deep sea fishing, which contributes over $6 billion to the state's economy and employs over 100,000 people, per the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.  With the richly diverse array of fish like shark, mahi-mahi and sailfish, South Florida remains an important fishing capital in the world.

Fuel has always been a major issue for any fishing boat, but now that prices have gone down considerably to less than $3 a gallon in some marinas business is booming for many operators.  Captain Stan Saffan of THERAPY-IV has been in the business for numerous years.  His boat is capable of accommodating up to seven fishing lines for six paying customers.  Operating the boat used to cost upwards of $10,000 a month in gas but thanks to the drop in fuel, it has dropped down to about $4,000 a month.

There are strong predictions that the price of unleaded gas will drop below $2 a gallon by the time Christmas arrives, which means more money for exciting fishing boat experiences aboard one of the best deep sea charter fishing boats in South Florida.

The Way the Holidays Are Spent in South Florida

Have you ever seen someone dressed as Santa Claus walking barefoot along the beach during the holidays?  It may not be all that unusual here in South Florida, and it's one of the many examples of how different the holiday experience is over here than say, New York, where the presence of snow and the various holiday-themed events present something closer to the typical idea of the holidays.  Speaking of snow, there has yet to be any snowfall since the last time it happened in 1977.  With the warmer climate, how do South Floridians get into the holiday spirit?

The perennial Santa's Enchanted Forest is essentially like walking into the equivalent of a winter wonderland.  Full of decorations, elaborate holiday light displays, and plenty of rides the so-called “world's largest holiday theme park” remains a South Florida fixture.  Another annual tradition is watching the Miami Heat play a competitive game at the American Airlines Arena on Christmas Day, with this year's opponent being the New Orleans Pelicans.  Anyone who wishes to go caroling will be able to join fellow carolers in Miami Beach's Lincoln Road on Sunday at 7:30 pm.

Getting to Know the Blackfin Tuna

The blackfin tuna is frequently found within various areas throughout Florida, such as the Florida Keys Humps and the bluewater ledges in the northeastern area.  There is a lot of information available about them, such as the bait the fish prefers which includes ballyhoo and live sardines, but what about other factors like the conditions they prefer or their growth rate?  Thanks to research at Nova Southeastern University, there is a wealth of information on these sea dwellers.

For starters, blackfin tuna prefer to hang around waters where the temperature is between 71 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.  Though they typically swim at depths of about 187 feet below the surface, it's not unusual for them to periodically dive to depths of over 650 feet.  Usually, blackfins prefer deeper depths during the daytime, and tend to ascend to shallower depths when night falls.  Though there is no concrete reason as to why blackfin tuna tend to exhibit this behavior, research suggests the fish prefers to find a place it happens to like and remain there.

Remembering Pearl Harbor

Today marks the 74th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.  If you are too young to remember this day, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor in the island of Oahu, Hawaii, forcing the United States to become a part of World War II.  The attack claimed the lives of more than 2,000 service members, nearly 50 innocent civilians, and wounded 1,178 people.  Then President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a date which will live in infamy.”

As a historic day of remembrance in the United States, every year we take the time to honor these civilians and servicemen.  Several of the survivors also take the time to share their stories of the fateful day, such as Dania Beach resident Edward Hammond, one of the last known survivors who was working for the United States Navy.

To each and every one of the victims and the lives affected during the Pearl Harbor attacks, we will never forget you.

More Art Basel Events to Explore and Enjoy

Have you been attending all of the Art Basel-related events?  This year there seems to be nearly as much going on at the Miami Beach Convention Center as there is over in the city of Miami.  From the numerous parties to the pop-ups, fans of contemporary art have a tremendous amount of art to experience and admire.  If you have yet to head to any of the Art Basel events and are looking to soak in as much as you can, here are two to consider.

The Loewe's Miami Design District store is hosting its first curated exhibition called Loewe's Chance Encounters. The work of several contemporary and historical British artists like Paul Nash and Rose Wylie will be on display.  Although Art Basel ends in a few days, the artwork will remain on display until January 17th.

Fans of Latin music can attend the Latin Cabaret Concept at El Tucán in the Brickell area.  The show features singer Cucu Diamantes and musician Alain Perez in a contemporary cabaret that honors Cuba's glitz and glamour in the 1940s.  The show starts tonight at 8:00 pm and continues until Saturday.

Art Basel a Boon for Hotels

There is no doubt about Art Basel's increasing popularity.  The annual event's status has been elevated to the point where it draws artists from all over the world and it only continues to get bigger and better every year.  The 14th edition starting on Thursday is no exception to this and hoteliers are set to make huge profits from the thousands of attendees and artists needing a place to stay in South Florida.  With more than 200 modern and contemporary galleries to explore, the hospitality business is gearing up for a great holiday season.

According to the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, Art Basel is second only to New Year's Eve when it comes to generating revenue, based on the huge success of last year's event.  Along with the week of Easter, Art Basel is among the busiest and remains just as busy as the weeks leading up to the major holidays.  It's so busy in fact, that many guests have booked their hotel stay up to a year in advance.

Are you ready for this year's Art Basel Miami Beach?

Thanksgiving Parties in Miami

Thanksgiving is this Thursday!  By now you've probably already purchased everything you plan to prepare to celebrate the big holiday and are getting ready to cook a host of tasty meals.  While most people are busy preparing and getting those last minute ingredients, the Thanksgiving festivities in Miami don't stop with just the traditional meal.  There are plenty of parties going on where you can burn some calories before and after getting stuffed.

The 13th Annual 80s Prom is on Wednesday, November 25th at Electric Pickle.  Everything about the event is themed to the decade where wild hair and neon were the norms.  For $15 attendees enjoy a variety of music in genres like freestyle and new wave and there is also a prom photo booth plus $5 punch.

If the 80s aren't your thing, the Rock 'n' Wobble Before the Gobble Gobble also takes place on Wednesday at Sidebar 9pm with music provided by DJ Ethics and Blaze Carreras.  Details of what's involved are scarce but expect to enjoy great music, dancing, drinks, and a great time with your friends or family.

After you've had your Thanksgiving meal head over to Churchill's Pub and experience Camp Chippewa: Thanxgiving for All.  The shenanigans start at 9pm and it's sure to be a great way to end the holiday.

Remembering the Victims of the Paris Attacks

Most of the major headlines lately have been about last week's attacks in the city of Paris, France.  A group of terrorists coordinated a series of attacks involving bombings, hostage taking and mass shootings, resulting in the loss of more than 100 lives and over 400 people injured.  The attacks are among the deadliest in France since World War II.

Although the loss is significant, the response around the world to the attacks has shown that despite the brutality, people remain united and supportive.  Many countries have rallied support for France, and in the United States social media has been ablaze with messages of love, support, optimism, strength, and solidarity.  On Facebook, thousands of users have done their small part to show their support by changing their profile picture to that of the French flag.  The hashtags #PrayforParis and #JeSuisParis (French for “I am Paris”) have also been trending.

THERAPY-IV stands united with the people of France and remembers each and every one of the innocent lives lost during these attacks.  Stay strong.

Don't Miss the Miami International Auto Show

Among Miami's numerous large scale events, vehicle aficionados very much look forward to the Miami International Auto Show.  Since 1971, the event has experienced exponential growth and it is now the most prestigious and largest event of its kind in the United States.  In previous years, the show has been used to introduce new products and over forty of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers have showcased their newest models and concept cars.  The 2013 show was among the most momentous, and this year's show is even bigger and more exciting.

One of the new attractions this year is “Car Meets Art”.  This exhibition showcases artwork by internationally renowned urban artists that have contributed their creativity by painting vehicles and murals that are truly a sight to behold.

Returning Miami International Auto Show events include the various ride and drive events where attendees can test drive several of the latest models by leading manufacturers.  Jeep enthusiasts can attend Camp Jeep, designed to highlight the robust capabilities of Jeep vehicles.  Participants get to ride with a trained instructor along rugged terrain and steep inclines.

The Miami International Auto Show is currently underway at the Miami Beach Convention Center and will continue until November 15th. Don't miss out!

Veterans Day Events

Today is Veterans Day, when we take the time to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.  Unlike Memorial Day, which honors the men and women who gave their lives and perished during service, Veterans Day is a celebration of the services provided by all U.S. military veterans.  Formerly known as Armistice Day, it was President Woodrow Wilson who named November 11th the holiday, proudly proclaiming “...solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory….”

Several events are happening in South Florida in remembrance of Veterans Day, starting with the annual Aventura Salutes America's Veterans.  Local veterans share their personal stories, and there are also patriotic performances by the Aventura City of Excellence School.

The Miami Beach Veterans Day Parade has been a city mainstay for over 45 years, spearheaded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.  Businesses, students, organizations, military groups, and public schools come together to walk from 17th Street all the way to Flamingo Park Baseball Stadium where a wreath ceremony is held.

Great Florida Fishing Spots This Week

Have you booked your deep sea charter fishing boat experience yet?  Florida is seeing lots of great activity lately, and with the lower temperatures it's worth getting out onto the open seas, practicing your fishing skills and finding where most of the activity is taking place.  Let's see where all of the activity is happening.

The coast to the north of the Florida Bay boat ramp has been seeing a considerable amount of snook and redfish activity and may be one of your best bets.  Tarpon, sea trout and tripletail are also spending a lot of time in this area, allowing for a lot of varied fishing activity.

Daytime offshore swordfishing has been quite outstanding lately in Miami.  Over in Key Biscayne, sea trout, jack crevalles, bluefish and Spanish mackerel have all been seen in large numbers, as well as snook.  Larger catches like barracudas have also been seen over in the flats.  Over in the blue-water edge near the Bayside Marketplace Marina, Sailfish and small kingfish have been spotted.

Moving over to Key Largo, blackfin tuna have been seen in the Humps, while wahoo are swimming around the outer reef line.

Miami Heat Starts the Season with a Win

Three-time NBA champions the Miami Heat started their season on a high note, winning the Wednesday opener against the Charlotte Hornets with a score of 104-94. Among the highlights was newly drafted player Justise Winslow, making his NBA debut and scoring two points for the team. Longtime players like Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade also made their presence felt, scoring 21 and 20 points, respectively. A significant difference with this newly invigorated team is how practically each player contributed to the win, with several players managing to play for at least ten minutes.

Speaking of Chris Bosh, his score of 21 points against the Hornets marked a triumphant return after he was sidelined due to health problems involving blood clots and pneumonia. Bosh was in splendid spirits, gesturing to his Magic City fans and thanking them for their support and well wishes during his absence.

The Heat will next be up against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday as their second season opponent. Whether their successful season opener continues, we'll have to wait and see, but signs suggest the team is more focused this season and has the championship set in its sights.

Dan Campbell Leads Dolphins to Another Success

Joe Philbin's time with the Miami Dolphins was short-lived, and after the team's three straight losses a few weeks ago, his tenure with the team was not looked upon favorably by diehard Fins fans, with many calling for his ouster. His replacement Dan Campbell is only beginning to get his feet wet and has a lot to prove, but he's already off to a good start.

Under Dan Campell's guidance, the Miami Dolphins achieved a second consecutive win by crushing their opponents the Houston Texans with a score of 44-26 despite being considered overmatched. With this latest success, Dan Campbell has achieved the distinction of being the first midseason replacement coach to guide a team to a score of 82 points in his first two games in five decades.

During the game against the Houston Texans, quarterback Ryan Tannehill also made news after achieving an NFL record of 25 consecutive completions, eighteen against Texans and the other seven against the Tennessee Titans. His feat breaks the previous record set by Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Fins will face their toughest competition yet when they face off against the undefeated Patriots tonight in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

Fish for Some Wahoo in the Miami Waters

The temperatures have dropped to wonderfully agreeable numbers, making it an ideal time to get out onto the open sparkling seas and enjoy some deep sea fishing aboard the THERAPY-IV.  With the sunshine and breezy weather, you'll have a great time learning all about wahoo fishing.

The wahoo appears in varying sizes and can be found swimming in schools, or you might see a larger one exploring the Miami seas solo.  They are identifiable by their eye-catching stripes and their slender shape.  Fishing legend says that the wahoo is among the fastest swimming fish in the open seas and they are in fact quite the speedy creatures.  They are also notorious for their razor sharp teeth, so it's important to handle them with the utmost of care.

Wahoo tend to hang out near the waters of the Gulf Stream close to the shores of Miami Beach, so you're more than likely to catch a couple as well as many other varieties of fish using methods like drift fishing, live bait and trolling, this one being the more common method of catching them.

Spend a half-day or a full day exploring the South Florida waters and trying your hand at catching wahoo and many other fish on the THERAPY-IV!  The weather is absolutely fantastic!

The Fins and the 'Canes Emerge Triumphant

Miami football fans rejoice!  Both the Miami Hurricanes and the Miami Dolphins achieved wins last weekend against Virginia Tech and the Tennessee Titans, respectively.

A quartet of turnovers with ten points being scored off two of them plus quarterback Brad Kaaya's stellar right arm resulted in the Hurricanes managing a 30-20 win over Virginia Tech.  The victory represents the first Atlantic Coast Conference win for the 'Canes after experiencing a loss against archrival Florida State University and the Cincinnati Bearcats.  The team is set to face off against another formidable opponent this Saturday: the Clemson Tigers.  Speaking of Kaaya, the quarterback has managed to score a pair of touchdowns in every single one of his home starts.

Switching over to the Dolphins, defensive end Cameron Wake kicked things off on a positive note by managing a pair of fumbles plus four sacks, all within the first half!  The game against the Titans marks the debut of interim coach Dan Campbell who made it a point of focusing on a physical and more fun approach.

Film and Fast Cars in October and November

There are only two and a half months left before we welcome 2016, but there are a number of events taking place throughout Miami and Miami Beach in the coming days.  You might have to adjust your calendar to fit them all, but here are two of the many highlights.

Did you know that the Miami International Film Festival hosts a mini festival prior to the main event in March?  Gems takes place over the course of four days and features “las joyas de la corona”, which translates to “the crown jewels” of film releases during the fall season.  If you love foreign cinema, the festival will be screening films like It's Now or Never and The Assassin.  Academy Award winning composer James Horner who passed away earlier this year and has worked on films like Avatar and Titanic will be receiving a tribute.  The Gems festival starts on October 22nd at Miami Dade College's Tower Theater.

If you're passionate about vehicles, make sure to get your tickets for the Miami International Auto Show taking place over at the Miami Beach Convention Center.  A showcase of classic cars and luxury models from names like automakers Ferrari and Porsche, it's a playground for any auto enthusiast!  You'll be able to take a test drive starting November 6th through the 15th.

Get Your Tickets Today for the South Beach Seafood Festival

One of the best places to enjoy seafood in Miami Beach is at Joe's Stone Crab.  This restaurant has been around for several decades and to this day it's still one of the best places to enjoy some delectably delicious foods beyond its famous stone crab.  If you want to try some other seafood, the South Beach Seafood Festival is coming to town for the third time on October 23rd and promises to provide a smorgasbord of seafood for those who can't get enough of it.

The two day event begins on Friday at Ninth Street and Ocean Drive where several local chefs will be putting their culinary skills to the test in a series of seafood themed battles in the Chef Showdown, emceed by Naked Taco Chef Ralph Pagano.  It will be up to the audience to determine the ultimate winner of the showdown starting at 7 pm and lasting well into the evening until 11 pm.  Tickets for the Chef Showdown cost $150.

On Saturday you'll be able to sample seafood items from more than forty menus prepared by chefs in Miami and Miami Beach at the main event.  Participate in mixology demos, enjoy the live music, or sample some of the lobster skewers and shrimp tacos set to be served at the event.  Tickets for the Saturday event start at $25.  It's going to be a deliciously delightful seafood weekend!

Where to Fish This Week

Looking for somewhere to go fishing this week?  Here are a couple of places you might want to consider if you're looking to make a catch, provided you're willing to do a little driving or happen to live near these areas.

Although the waters haven't been entirely favorable for offshore fishing because of the huge swells, Jensen Beach's inshore fishing has seen feverish activity.  Because of the enormous schools of mullet migrating towards the area, 25-pound jack crevalles, tarpon, snook, and redfish.  During the daytime, it's not uncommon to see large numbers of fish attacking these schools of mullet, which makes the odds of a catch very favorable.  Once the evening comes around, snook can be found near the shadow lines of bridges near the Indian River tearing up jigs and live baits.

Large schools of baitfish are also exploring Biscayne Bay's western shoreline right here in Miami-Dade County, leading to highly opportune snook fishing.  Particularly on the Oceanside flats, bonefish have been spotted around these areas, and the finger channels also have lots of mutton snappers and groupers hanging around.

Dolphin Fishing and Other News

The year may have gotten off to a slow start, but ten months in it seems like 2015 is actually going to be the best year for dolphin fishing in quite some time.  For the most part, the bite has remained good to excellent and with fish expected to migrate south, there are high odds that fishing aficionados will continue to see even more activity as the rest of the year progresses.

An essential step that fishers are taking is seeking out floating weed mats and blue waters.  It's in these waters where a fisher may want to pitch out a bit of live mullet or sardine chunks.  These baits can prove useful in attracting the fish towards the boat and drawing them away from the larger weed mat sections.

In other fishing related news, fifteen-year-old Kyle Falbo of Miami Beach was crowned the Top Junior Boy after he successfully caught a blackfin tuna and a 17-pound black grouper.  He also released a 25-pound tarpon and a massive 200-pound bull shark.

Those of you looking for largemouth bass in the Everglades may have a bit of a harder time due to the higher water levels caused by the considerable amounts of rain lately.  Because of these levels, the bass are having an easier time accessing the marshy interiors.

Getting Started with Fishing in Florida

If you've never been fishing in the state of Florida, now may be as good a time as any!  The country's “Fishing Capital of the World” has over 7,500 lakes, more than 10,000 miles of rivers and 2,276 of tidal shoreline.

Some of the fish you'll find throughout Florida include the tarpon, butterfly peacock bass, sailfish, and the Florida Pompano.   With the state's penchant for fishing you may find these fish in several places including Kissimee State Park, Lake Seminole, and Skyway Fishing Pier State Park.  Each of these places has their own set of rules and regulations when it comes to fishing so make sure to be aware of those before you decide to head out onto the waters.

Before you do any fishing, however, you're probably going to have to apply for your fishing license. These can usually be purchased on a daily, short term or annual basis or you may also be able to buy a lifetime license.  You'll need to buy your license from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission which can be done online or you can also look into stores that sell fishing equipment.

Spend the Day at October's Kitetober Fest

The Haulover Park and Miami Beach skyline is going to become a dazzling spectrum of colors next month when the 23rd annual Kitetober Fest takes place on Sunday, October 18th hosted by Miami-Dade Parks and Skyward Kites.  The event kicks off at 12 pm and continues until 5 pm.  Best of all, admission to the event is free, and parking costs only $7.

If you have never attended the kite festival, you're missing out on some of the classic kites that have made frequent appearances at previous events like the thirty foot Nemo fish, the flying scuba man, and the even larger 150 foot flying rainbow. These are only a sample of the various kites that will be soaring the skies as guests are encouraged to bring their kites.  If you don't have a kite, you can make one free of charge at the event by participating in one of the paper kite building classes or buying one that's already done for you.  Whether you have a small kite or one that's designed to grab attention against the blue skies of Miami Beach, kites of all sizes are welcome!  Try your kite flying skills against others in the separate kids and adults competition or just bring a blanket, find a comfy spot and see everyone's creations while enjoying a drink or bite.

Fishing Tips for Lower Back Pain Prevention

Any sport or hobby that involves physical activity can potentially cause injury, and deep sea fishing is no exception.  When trying to reel in large fish, there's always that slight possibility that one unintended movement can cause some back pain.  Fish both large and small can take up to thirty minutes to catch and with all that calculated reeling, deep sea fishing can become an intense endurance workout.  The following strategies can potentially help you to avoid lower back pain.

The first tip is something you've probably heard throughout your life: keep your back straight.  As you reel in, fish will be pulling against you towards the ocean floor and may cause you to be pushed against the railing of the boat.  You may also want to try and get into the habit of using your legs as a means of preventing back pain.  The customary thing to do is to use your back and your arms to pull in whatever fish you're catching, but you can try bending your knees and then straightening them as you're pulling in, shifting the force to another part of the body.

Use the ocean itself to your advantage by keeping an eye on the waves.  As the boat is going up the wave, start winding once it gets to the top and starts making its way back down.  The idea here is you won't need to stress your arms and body as much by pulling up on a fish that's swimming against the ocean swells.

Lastly, go wherever your fish decides to go.  In other words, if it starts to swim towards the sides or decides it wants to swim circles around the boat, follow its movements and try to stay in front of it by moving your feet.  Twisting your body in odd angles will cause unneeded stress on your back.

Where to Look When You're out Deep Sea Fishing

No matter how prepared you may be when you're about to go deep sea fishing, your efforts will ultimately be in vain if you don't know the best spots to look for fish.  Nowadays there are apps that can help you track the locations where you're most likely to find fish, but there's always that slight possibility that your phone may not get the best signal performance when out in the middle of the water.  In such a scenario, it's best to stick to the tried and true methods of finding fish to catch like a recreational sonar.  Here are a few deep sea fishing areas where you may want to look.

Start things off by exploring reefs and rocks.  These spots are practically havens for all kinds of aquatic  species, and they also serve as a place for fish to rest when dealing with strong currents.  In many natural and artificial reefs fish may be living there, in which case you may be able to snag some as far as 100 yards since many of them may be out patrolling their home.  If you're having trouble getting reef fish to bite, consider using a vertical jig that you can extend towards the bottom and then quickly bringing it back up towards your boat.  When dealing with high-speed fish like tuna, for example, fast-trolling fishing lures and slow-troll live baits can prove useful.

Manmade structures like navigational aids and towers can also prove to be hotspots for some fish species seeking refuge within the structure and, just like the reefs and rocks, there's a good chance there will also be some patrolling the perimeter of these structures.  Always check beforehand to make sure there are no existing regulations as there may be limited access to these places.

Remembering September 11th, 2001

Today marks the fourteenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks that took the lives of more than 2,500 people.  As we take a moment to remember and reflect on the events and the lives lost, we'd also like to honor their memory as well as present one of the ways you can pay respect to the lives lost during this tragic event that forever changed the nation.

Besides being a day of reflection, September 11th is also federally recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance in which people are encouraged to perform acts of kindness, charity and volunteer as a means of honoring the victims as well as the survivors. MyGoodDeed is a nonprofit spearheading the observance of this event.  If you visit their website (www.911day.org) you can learn more about projects taking place today or donate money towards ensuring that the event continues to grow.  You can also pledge to do your own good deed and share it with your friends.

If you happen to be too young to remember that day, a group of terrorists coordinated an attack on the United States, targeting specific landmarks including the Pentagon and the two World Trade Center towers, the latter of which were completely destroyed and eventually replaced with the One World Trade Center building, also known as the Freedom Tower.

To the victims, survivors, and first responders, we will never forget you.

Deep Sea Fishing Tips

Have you gone Miami deep sea fishing lately?  The summer season may be coming to an end, but with the Magic City's fantastic weather, it's always a nice time to head out into the Atlantic Ocean and experience what it's like.  If you've never gone deep sea or offshore fishing, there are a couple of tips to help make your first experience a lot more enjoyable.

Keep an eye out for birds.  If you happen to see several seagulls, chances are there are plenty of fish swimming in those waters.  Even floating debris like wood indicates that there may be large game fish to catch. Schools of yellowfin tuna are often found near groups of dolphins, so if you see a bunch of porpoises, there may be yellowfin in the area.

If you'd like to boost the odds of finding big game fish, you'll want to stick to reefs.  These fish enjoy snacking on other fish that live on these reefs.  Some reefs like those in the Florida Keys may be protected so make sure you're fishing in the right spots.

When it comes to snooks, you'll want to use the similar practices as though you were fishing for bass, meaning it's best to stick to rocks, ledges, and posts.

Sea sickness may happen, especially if you're just beginning to get your feet wet and aren't accustomed to being out in the ocean for very long.  Should you experience it, stay on the deck and keep your gaze on the horizon.  Also, stay away from boat fumes if possible as this will only make you feel worse.

A Look at Miami Heat Player Dwayne Wade

Miami is known for many things, the wonderful weather, entertaining attractions, beautiful beaches, and residents that are even more gorgeous.  However, one of the most famous things Miami is recognized for is Dwayne Wade, considered the unofficial ambassador of Miami Beach and the Heat.  Born January 17th, 1982, Dwayne Tyrone Wade, Jr., began his basketball career junior year at Harold L. Richards High School in Oak Lawn, Chicago.  Crediting famous Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan as his inspiration and high school basketball coach, Jack Fitzgerald, as one of the most positive influences in his life; Wade was able to focus his skills into becoming an incredible high school basketball player.

As one of the most famous basketball players in the world, Dwayne got his start in the NBA in 2003, when he was a first round draft pick for the Miami Heat.  Starting with a strong rookie year, this prolific player has had many milestones, but throughout them all, he has remained loyal to Miami.  In eleven seasons, he has been named to the All-Rookie team and the All-Star team.  Additionally, he is credited with leading the Miami Heat to their first NBA championship in franchise history in his third season, additionally he was the 2006 NBA Finals MVP.  In 2008, Wade joined the Summer Olympics United States men’s basketball team, where they won multiple gold medals in Beijing, China.

Throughout the rest of the years, Wade was the individual who carried the Heat team on his back, until he recruited Lebron James and Chris Bosh, which led to the Heat winning two out of the four NBA Finals Championship games that they participated in.  Not only is he a great player, but he is also a wonderful leader and philanthropist, as he has helped plenty of people in need with donations and appearances.  Highly influential, many fans consider Miami “Wade County.”  So much so, that he will be the face of the Heat’s Miami Vice themed night.

A Look at the Sperm Whale

With Miami being so close to the Atlantic Ocean residents and locals are treated to the option to see a variety of magnificent marine life.  One of these incredible creatures is the sperm whale.  The sperm whale is not only the largest of the toothed whales, but they are also the largest toothed predator in the water.  Surprisingly while a mature male may average at 52 feet in length, they can get as big as 67 feet with their head accounting for one-third of the length, this animal is not only breathtaking beautiful but also rather impressive.

Even though the mammal is the largest whale and predator, they are only the second deepest diving animal, following the Cuvier’s beaked whale; the creature is able to dive 7,382 feet to seek its prey, primarily squid.  Found anywhere in the open ocean, the females live in groups cooperating together to protect and nurse the younger males, while the older males are loaners and live by themselves until mating season.  The mature sperm whale naturally has few predators, but the calves and weakened adults can fall prey to pods of orcas.

Look at Miami Dolphins Preseason

With football season just around the corner, the Miami Dolphins are using the preseason games, to work on their offense and defense and shoring up some of their plays.  Starting quarterback, Ryan Tannehill seems to be the breakout star this year.  Completing six of seven passes for 56 yards and a touchdown pass to receiver Jarvis Landry, the new quarterback had a nearly perfect impressive run against the Chicago Bears last week.  Proving many sports enthusiasts correct, Tannehill is substantiating their claims of him being the next big thing.

Saturday is the second preseason game, against the Carolina Panthers, and with plans for Tannehill and the first team offense to have more time on the field, the teammates are guaranteed to build much needed chemistry with each other.

Bouncing back from last season, the Dolphins have emphasized the importance of improving “chunk” plays on offense during this year’s training camp and offseason program.  Additionally, the team continues to work on the starting offense receiving fewer penalties.  Unfortunately, during last week’s game, there were two holding calls by offensive lineman Billy Turner and Jason Fox, nearly stalling the Dolphins’ opening drive; luckily, they were able to bounce back rather quickly.  Sports critics and fans alike are hoping that the team continues their stellar performance well into the new football season.

Fun Activities to Do With Kids Before They Go Back to School

Even though the summer season is almost over, there is still time to have fun with the kids.  Living in Miami there are hundreds of fun family friendly activities available.  Below are some ideas on how to make these last few days of the summer a memorable experience.

Outdoor Activities: Since the weather is beautiful in Miami Beach, organizing an outdoor gathering would be a great option.  Arrange a picnic with the family where everyone provides an item, or have a campout in the backyard, no matter the choice, the possibilities are endless.

Do Something Charitable: Summertime is a great opportunity to do family volunteer work.  Hosting a lemonade stand and/or bake sale is a great way to raise money for charity and to have quality family time.

Do Something Silly
: Once the kids are back in school, there will not be much opportunity for them to act silly.  Planning something as simple as a shaving cream fight or water balloon battle royale is a wonderful way to help them start the school year with a grin and a giggle.

What are some things you like to do with your family?  THERAPY-IV, a Miami Beach deep sea charter fishing boat service, brought this update to you.  This charter provides all of their clientele with a high-end deep sea fishing experience.  With their luxury yacht, exceptional customer service and experienced and professional Captain and crew, visitors can rest easy, they will not only have a memorable fishing experience but will also have the pleasure of visiting the best spots off the coast of Miami and Biscayne Bay.  To schedule a trip and/or to learn more about Miami deep sea fishing, contact 305-945-1578.

A Brief History of Artificial Reefs

Florida is the home to a variety of artificial reefs, a man-made underwater structure, many of which were created from ships that were sunk deliberately.  A few of the vessels include, Coast Guard cutters Duane and Bibb, the U.S. Navy landing ship Spiegel Grove, USS Oriskany, and the USNS Hoy S. Vandenberg, a former WWII era troop transport.

Usually, these unique structures are designed to encourage maritime life in sections with featureless bottoms.  Additionally these reefs are used to control erosion, block ships from crossing illegal areas, and to even improve surfing.  Sometimes these projects do not always go as planned.  For instance, in the 1970s, more than 200,000 used tires were dumped off the coast of Fort Lauderdale in order to create an Osborne reef.  However, the tires were not secured properly, causing the strong currents to break the tires loose, thus sending them crashing into the reef and the other marine life around.  In 2009, after 10 years, the project failed when around 100,000 of the tires were removed from the ocean floor.

The Wonderful World of Coral

One of the great things about living in Miami is being constantly surrounded by water, which allows for a lot more fun and entertainment.  Aside from the wonderful Miami Beach deep sea fishing, locals, and tourists can also participate in adventure packed scuba diving.  The awesome thing about scuba diving is all of the beautiful fish, gorgeous reefs, and magnificent coral that can be seen.

Corals are marine invertebrates that usually live in compact colonies of identical individual polyps.  A polyp is an animal that is sac like and only a few millimeters in diameter and a few centimeters in length.  Since the animal is asexual, it begins as a single polyp, which then buds to produce another and so forth.  A few different types of coral exist, two of the most known are “stony coral,” which is created when the polyps produce a hard shell, and “soft coral,” created when there is no skeleton produced.  Corals receive their vibrant colors via the Zooxanthellae, a photosynthetic alga that lives inside their tissues.  When coral has a white or bleached color, it is because they are losing the algae.

Football Season is Coming

In honor of the upcoming football season, the associates at The THERAPY-IV, a Miami Beach deep sea fishing charter boat service and big fans of the Dolphins, presents an in depth profile of the Miami Dolphins.

Attorney and politician Joe Robbie and actor/comedian Danny Thomas founded the Miami Dolphins, a professional American football team.  The Dolphins, formed in response to the Miami Seahawks departure in 1946, is one of the oldest NFL franchises in the Deep South.  Officially joining the NFL in 1970, the inspiring team was led by Don Shula, for much of their early history.

Despite losing their first Super Bowl game, Super Bowl VI, to the Dallas Cowboys, the Dolphins were able to make an incredible come back in 1972, by completing the NFL’s only perfect season, including winning the Super Bowl VII.  By winning Super Bowl VII, they were able to become the first team to appear in three consecutive Super Bowls, and the second team to win back-to-back championships.

Arguably, one of the most prolific members of the Miami Dolphins is Dan Marino.  From 1983 – 1999 he became one of the most high profile passers in NFL history.  Breaking numerous league passing records, leading the Dolphins to 5 division titles, 10 playoff appearances, and a Super Bowl XIX win guaranteed his place in NFL history.

What Kind of Gear Should You Use When Deep Sea Fishing

One of the greatest things about living in Miami is the many different types of activities that are available.  Miami Beach deep sea fishing is one of the greatest activities around.  Of course, if you rent a fishing charter, like the kinds of trips The Therapy-IV offers, then the Captain will have everything you need.  However, if you choose to go by yourself, below is a list of the essential gear every fisherman should carry with them.

Rod, Extra Fishing Line, hooks of varying sizes, and sinkers: In regards to the type of rod, either a light or a heavy tackle is ideal; it all depends on what types of fish you are planning on catching.

Live and Artificial Bait: Small fish, worms, dead bait (like squid, sardine, and mackerel) are all acceptable forms of live bait.  You can either buy the bait or catch it on the way to the fishing site.

Needle Nose Pliers: Ensure you do not forget this heavily needed tool, as it is used to remove the hook from the fish you will catch.

Line Cutter:  Lines get tangled and/or snagged, hence the need for a line cutter, a quick and easy to use fix.

Rope Tape Measure: Good for measuring the fish you caught for future references.

First Aid Box: Fishing can be dangerous, so always ensure you have a mini first aid box with you.

Rag or Gloves: Slippery fish can be a pain; these items will ensure that you do not lose your catch.

Camera: With the rough waters, you do not want to risk losing your expensive smart phone, so bringing a camera is a good idea.

Cooler: If you are bringing your fish home with you, a separate cooler is a smart choice.

As the premier Miami Beach Deep Sea Fishing charter in South Florida, The THERAPY-IV owes its success to not only our valued clients, but to the beautiful environment on which we all depend. The seas have been good to us all these years, so we’re returning the favor through our support of the Gray FishTag Research project.

Founded in 2014 in Pompano Beach, this extensive international tagging program collaborates with fisherman to directly collect valuable scientific data on aquatic life. By partnering with people who know the ocean better than anyone, the GFTR can more effectively tag and monitor the multitude of different species in our abundance seas.

This allows scientists to learn everything from migration patterns and species behavior, to population numbers and the ecological state of a given species. Thanks to hard working and professional fisherman like ourselves (and many of our clients), the GFTR has recorded higher fish recapture rates than any other program of its kind.

With this hands-on effort, scientists and fisherman alike can learn more about marina life and how best to conserve it. Participating in the program, whether directly or through sponsorship, is a great way to preserve our precious seas for future generations to enjoy. The THERAPY-IV is proud to be doing its part.

Tips for a Great Deep Sea Fishing Experience

Miami Deep Sea Fishing is one of the best things about visiting and/or living in Miami. The wide variety of fish that can be caught means this experience is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression. The best way to experience this glorious event is to charter a deep sea fishing boat.

The THERAPY-IV is a luxury is a deep sea fishing luxury yacht service, with twin yachts and a Captain and crew with over four decades of experience.  With this immense level of experience, The THERAPY-IV would like to bring to you a couple of tips to ensure you have the best Deep Sea Fishing Experience available.

When planning a deep sea fishing trip, deciding what kinds of fish you are hoping to catch is important as this will also help you decide which type of boat you would like to charter.  Basically, there are three ways to catch the many different types of fish in the sea, which are bottom fishing, trolling, and offshore fishing.

Bottom fishing entails dropping your bait to or near the seafloor, thereby attracting such enticing bottom dwellers as red, white, and black snapper, scampi, grouper, triggerfish, and amberjack fish dwell.

Trolling involves constantly moving the bait, which forces kingfish, mackerel, and sailfish to have to play catch up and offer a bigger fight. This is great for those seeking a little more action while they fish.

If you are looking to mount a more impressive trophy, than going offshore option would be the best, if most challenging, choice. Here is where large and tough catches like the blue and white marlin and the dolphin live.

Another thing to keep in mind before you book your charter boat is what type of gear, equipment, and tackle you will need. This process is much easier if you already know what type of fish you are looking to catch. The THERAPY-IV is already stocked with all of the latest gear and supplies you need to catch any number of fish. Whatever your fishing style, preference, or experience, our world-class boat and crew have you covered.
