Miami Beach Launches Its Final Trolley Route

Finding parking and dealing with traffic congestion may eventually become a thing of the past. Today marks the official debut of the fourth and final leg of Miami Beach’s trolley service. The complimentary trolley has launched its Collins Link route, adding the last piece to the trolley system.

With the newly unveiled route, the trolley will now be able to travel from 5th Street all the way to 88th Street with transfers. Three of the trolley’s four lines operate from 6 am until midnight, while the Alton-West Loop begins its operation at 8 am until midnight Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, all of the trolley lines begin at 8 am and run until midnight.

The completion of the trolley’s final route should come as welcome news to Miami Beach residents. Each trolley can accommodate about 25 passengers and boasts Wi-Fi access that is free as well as security cameras. Get Free Lunch in Miami Beach in Exchange for a Gift

Chances are you may have at some point during your life received a gift that you didn’t want or didn’t like. “Re-gifting” is a possible option if you have no intention of using or wearing what you were given, but this holiday season you can put your unwanted gifts to better use. A certain Miami Beach restaurant will take your gift, give it to someone less fortunate, and give you a free lunch in return for your noble act of kindness.

Specifically, the Burger King located off of West 41st Street near Meridian Avenue will be accepting gifts in exchange for a complimentary Whopper sandwich. The restaurant will be accepting the gifts the day after Christmas beginning at 10:30 am to 5 pm. Once all gifts have been received, the restaurant will donate the gifts to charity. It’s essentially a win-win situation.

If you can’t make it to the Miami Beach location to give a gift, you can still potentially win a prize. Just post a picture on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #WhopperExchange to participate. BK will be choosing 100 random winners. Happy gift exchanging!

Big Names Come out for Art Basel

Miami's art-related events are many and chances are there is something going on at any time.  When it comes to art events, the biggest of them all is arguably Art Basel.  Taking place in December in Miami Beach, the week-long event attracts hundreds of thousands of people and it’s become a highly respected showcase of art in multiple mediums including photography, paintings, sculpture, and more.  This year, Art Basel celebrates its fifteenth anniversary and is attracting some major names.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Has Its Winner

Did you catch the exciting weekend stock car races? The Ford EcoBoost 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has officially come to an end, with Jimmie Johnson emerging the winner after a fierce competition at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Johnson’s win is his seventh Sprint Cup Series championship, and he is now tied with illustrious names like the legendary Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty for all time wins. The victory also marks Johnson’s fifth of the season, making him the most successful driver in the current season.

At first, it seemed as if Johnson’s opponents Kyle Larson, Carl Edwards, and Kevin Harvick were going to hold him back from his huge victory. Larson ended up in second place after Johnson took the lead during the final race restart. Harvick managed to lead the competition for a whopping 79 laps but ultimately ended up in third place behind Johnson and Larson. Joey Logano and Jamie McMurray finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Celebrate and Honor on Veterans Day

Tomorrow we will once again be celebrating Veterans Day, a public holiday when the country comes together to honor the men and women that once served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is often confused with Memorial Day, which honors the men and women who gave their lives and perished during service. Veterans Day is a celebration of the services provided by military veterans that are still living and may be retired.  Once known as Armistice Day, it was President Woodrow Wilson who officially designated November 11th as Veterans Day, proudly declaring “...solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory….”

Since Veterans Day is considered a federal holiday, many American workers and students do not have to go to work or school. All non-essential federal government offices will be closed tomorrow and there will be no mail delivery.  If you know someone who is a veteran, make sure to take the time to thank them for everything they have done.

Don’t Forget to Vote!

Today November 8th, is the last day that you can vote in this presidential election. This campaign has been the center of media coverage for a very long time, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Today is the day where the future of America is decided.

Not only are you voting for our future president but if you live in Florida you’re also voting for very important and controversial amendments. These amendments address solar energy, legalization of medical marijuana, and tax exemptions for first responders disabled in the line of duty and senior citizens.

As Americans it is our civic duty to vote even if you don’t like either of the candidates. This presidential election has been contentious, but don’t let that stop you from casting your vote and having an impact on this election. Every vote does count and don’t let your peers or the media discourage you, by voting today you have done your part and made a significant decision that will go down in history.

Great Neighborhoods for Young Trick-or-Treaters

Miami may be known for its legendary Halloween parties for adults, but we can’t forget about the other demographic that also likes to dress up in costume: the kiddos. For parents taking their kids trick-or-treating tonight, it’s about enjoying the ambiance and grabbing some candy in the best neighborhoods. Let’s check out some of the best, safe neighborhoods to take the little ones.

For the ultimate in candy treats, you may want to try Coral Gables. It’s known for its scenic, tree-lined streets and thanks to the complimentary Coral Gables trolley, it’s easy for families to get around. Miracle Mile is also a nice spot to visit, and there are sure to be several shops handing out treats.

Coconut Grove, or “The Grove” to us locals is also very pedestrian friendly and is known for its fusion of classic and modern. Explore the neighborhoods with the kids or visit CocoWalk. If you’re planning on visiting with the little ones, make sure to keep an eye on the clock to avoid the eventual appearance of college students and adults as the night continues.

Key Biscayne may require an entry fee to visit, but the Key West vibe is a nice, cool backdrop as you stroll the streets. Bring your kids to the beach to trick-or-treat and take some pictures by the ocean for some memorable Halloween moments.

Have a safe and fun Halloween!

The 24th Annual “Kiteober” Festival

This past Sunday was the annual kite festival in Miami Beach. Spectators were delighted to see hundreds of breathtaking colors and unique shapes of kites. The Skyward Kites Company and Miami Dade Parks Department have hosted this festival for over 20 years. Visitors can craft a kite for free, bring their own kite from home, or rent one from Skyward.

This event features free paper kite building and demonstration classes from professionals and enthusiasts alike. Since there is no age limit, both children and adult guests are encouraged to join the kite-flying competitions. There is no regulation on the size or structure of kites that can be flown in the kites competition. This allows for competitors to either buy their kites from a store or craft them by hand.

For those who want to observe the spectacle, all they have to do is gaze up at the sky and stare at the vibrant display before them. Live music with food and refreshments are available for purchase during the event. If you missed this past Sunday’s festival, there is the 25th annual Kite Day on February 18th & 19th, 2017.

Get Ready for a New Yachts Miami Beach

Along with the Miami International Boat Show, Yachts Miami Beach is a major event drawing hundreds of thousands of people looking to check out the latest yachts for sale. In 2017 the show will be celebrating 29 years but unlike previous events, this 29th version will bring some new changes to keep things fresh and more engaging.

There will be a new layout and look during the 2017 Yachts Miami Beach when it kicks off on February 16th near the popular Eden Roc and Fontainebleau. The show co-owners have hired a globally acclaimed design company responsible for reimagining the show. Next year’s show will feature the standard luxury yachts, musical acts performing live, floating cocktail lounges, and more. The company overseeing the changes has worked on major projects around the world like the popular tourist destination Atlantis Paradise Island in The Bahamas.

The new Yachts Miami Beach will be focusing heavily on the scenic location near the Indian Creek Waterway and five different entrances intended to create an artistic ambiance while providing attendees useful information. The sidewalks that once served as a means for foot traffic have been swapped for floating docks with concession stands selling food and beverages. For the first time ever, attendees will be able to use free water taxis. With all of the new changes, Yachts Miami Beach will become more interactive and inviting for buyers and exhibitors alike.

Weekend Events to Enjoy

It’s the first day of autumn and the day before Friday, which means another weekend to relax and enjoy an activity after working hard during the week. Parks, a fall festival, live music, these are just a couple of the events that are either free or inexpensive happening this weekend.

On Sunday, local Miami band Timbalive will be at Collins Park, performing their blend of timba and salsa music live to celebrate Hispanic heritage. If you’re a tourist looking to get a feel for Miami’s rich Cuban culture and its music, make sure to drop by.

Speaking of Cuban culture, “¿Que Pasa, USA?” was a popular television series that ran from 1977 to 1980, described as the first bilingual situation comedy in America. The series will be screened on Saturday at the Ludlam Trail where attendees can sip on complimentary Cuban coffee, dine on a pig roast, enjoy music and dancing plus much more.

September 24th is National Public Lands Day when all national park across the country offer free admission. On Thursday the 22nd, the inaugural Celebrity Edition of Taste of Hyde Beach will be kicking off at the SLS South Beach. The event includes “interactive spaces” that have been turned into restaurant pop-ups and unique food parties based on the hotel’s existing restaurants. A general admission ticket costs $75 or you can purchase a VIP Golden Ticket for $125.

To celebrate its one year anniversary, Izzy’s will be offering all you can eat lobster rolls on Sunday, the 25th. For just $25 you can dine on rolls plus all the beer you can manage to consume. If lobster rolls aren’t your thing you can always enjoy a taste of Texas Pao by Paul Qui tomorrow, September 20th. Paul Qui will be teaming up with Yoshi Okai, executive chef of Otoko in Austin for a special one-night-only meal.

Unlimited Food Samples at Next Week’s E.A.T!

The food and wine festivals are still a bit far away, but as is always the case in South Florida, a food-related event is probably taking place somewhere. Next Wednesday, foodies may wish to set aside some time to visit E.A.T! which stands for “Edible, Artisanal, and Tasteful".

E.A.T! is unique in that it encompasses much more than what’s typically offered at a food and drink festival. Attendees will be able to sample an unlimited number of bites from more than forty restaurants in an air-conditioned setting. Two chefs will duke it out in a competition to become the 2016 E.A.T! Champion. Some of the restaurants that will be participating include Thirteen Restaurant & Bar and Tee Jay Thai Sushi which are based in Wilton Manors, Miami’s Chicks N Wings and Donut Divas, Brazaviva Brazilian Steakhouse in Doral, and many more.

Any food that remains once E.A.T! Is over will be donated to LifeNet4Families, an institution dedicated to feeding Broward County’s hungry and homeless.

E.A.T! tickets cost $35 for general admission or $65 at the door. The event is taking place at the BB&T Center in Sunrise.

On Friday, check out Southern Revival, a fresh take on American cuisine consisting of a four-course lunch hosted by The Regional Kitchen & Public House. Saturday will see the debut of Rise and Dine, a beachside breakfast taking place at the Ocean Breeze Kitchen at the Eau Resort & Spa Palm Beach.
