Celebrate Groundhog Day This Thursday

This Thursday, we will once again celebrate Groundhog Day. Adopted in 1887, the day has become quite popular around the country as hundreds of thousands of people gather to watch the groundhog emerge from its burrow to determine whether the winter season will persist or if spring will arrive early. If it’s cloudy, then spring is around the corner. If the sun is out and the groundhog catches a glimpse of its shadow, then we’re in for an additional six weeks of winter.

Groundhog Day is particularly popular in southeastern Pennsylvania and taken very seriously. There are Groundhog Lodges set up to celebrate the holiday with social events called “fersommlinge” which include food, skits or plays, speeches and more. A type of Pennsylvania German dialect is strictly spoken during the event and anyone who utters a word in English must pay a small penalty.

The borough of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania holds the largest Groundhog Day celebration and it is the home of the famous Punxsutawney Phil groundhog.

Miami Beach Thanks You for Not Smoking

Miami Beach is known for having butts on the beaches, except it’s now taking the initiative to try and address the butts that come from cigarettes. The city recently added a pair of smoke-free zones at 86 Street in North Beach and at the southern end of Lummus Park at 5 Street in South Beach. Both of these smoke-free zones are voluntary.

Although the zones are meant to be voluntary and will therefore not be enforced, they may end causing some degree of confusion. The signs say “Thank you for not smoking” and they include a familiar image of a cigarette inside of a circle with a line through it. Commissioners also expressed concern that having an excess number of signs on the beach may dissuade tourists from visiting what is otherwise a very popular urban resort.

Right now, the voluntary non-smoking signs function largely as a social experiment but they may end up convincing a greater number of people not to smoke, leading to a cleaner beach for everyone and a healthier environment.

Save Some Room for the Second Annual Donuts! Festival

In 2016, a profusion of eatery openings resulted in many new places to dine on delicious bites. Velvet Creme was resurrected and the Salty Donut quickly became a Miami favorite. Last year also marked the debut of the Donuts! festival, which brought together hundreds of people to Wynwood Yard looking to try some booze, coffee, and a dizzying array of doughnut variations. Some of these variations included vegan doughnuts with shredded coconut meat, bacon doughnuts, guava and cheese, plus many more.

Donuts! will be returning on March 30th, but will be switching locations for its second outing. Instead of Wynwood Yard, the festival will be taking place at MAPS Backlot in Miami, a 10,000+ square foot al fresco event space that should allow for a greater amount of people looking to try some great doughnuts. Various shops from Miami-Dade as well as Palm Beach and Broward County will be showcasing their unique variations, including names like YoNutz, Circus Eats, and plenty more. Besides the doughnuts, there will be beer to sample and nonalcoholic beverages.

Miami Beach Opens New Water Taxi Location

Last Friday, Miami Beach officially welcomed its new water taxi service, perfect for those people that would prefer the feel of being on vacation versus being stuck in South Florida’s awful traffic. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Purdy Avenue in the Sunset Harbour neighborhood to officially welcome the water taxi.

For the time being, the water taxi will operate on Fridays through Sundays at its Purdy Avenue location. However, it will operate throughout the entire week at its three other locations. While the taxi may seem to be geared towards visitors, there are hopes that Miami Beach residents and those living across Biscayne Bay will also use it more often.

With the new Purdy Avenue location officially opened, people can leave their vehicle at the dock and use the water taxi between Miami Beach and Miami, with access points also located at Sea Isle Marina, Bayside Marketplace, and the Miami Beach Marina.

The water taxi can accommodate up to 38 people.

Fun Art Deco Weekend Events

Had it not been the for the efforts of the Miami Design Preservation League, Miami Beach’s famous Art Deco buildings would have ceased to exist. To celebrate this preservation, there is Art Deco Weekend, a time when the barrier island is flooded with people appreciating the city’s rich architectural history. Let’s take a look at some of the events going on.

If you’ve ever wondered about the Prohibition era, check out the History of Beer talk going on at the Starlight Lounge on Saturday, January 14th at 3 pm. Besides the talk being lead by a beer historian, you’ll also be able to try a few local craft brews.

Will your four-legged friend be joining you Art Deco Weekend? If you’re feeling up to it, enter them in the Bark Deco Dog Show. Your pooch might win in categories like “Most Unusual Mix” or “So Miami”. Your pet will need to be a minimum of four years old, he or she must be on a leash, and they must be current on their vaccinations. The show will begin on Sunday at the Art Deco Welcome Center on 10th Street and Ocean Drive at 1 pm.

Set some time aside on your calendar, ladies and gentlemen! The 2017 Yachts Miami Beach show will be returning to the barrier island next month beginning on February 16th through the 20th. If you’ve been to previous shows, this version promises a revamped experience.

There will be a pair of northern and southern water taxis available for attendees to use. The pick-up point for the former will be at 67th Street and Collins Avenue at the Rowing Club, while the latter pick-up point will be at COMO Metropolitan Hotel (formerly the Traymore) at 24th Street and Collins Avenue.

Check out These Miami Beach Juice Bars

Did you decide to start a juice cleanse as one of your New Year resolutions? If so, you’ll be pleased to know about the several new juice bars that have opened up in Miami Beach. Let’s take a look.

We’ll begin with Jugofresh on West Avenue, which has earned a reputation as the king of cold-pressed juices. Formerly a single location, there are now eleven Jugofresh locations with plans to open more. All juices are prepared using local fruits and vegetables, and it has since expanded its menu offerings to include bowls and salads. Baked goods that are vegan-friendly are also served.

Just a few spots to the southeast on Alton Road is the curiously named Milk Gone Nuts!, tucked away inside of a gas station. You’ll find organic green juices, bowls with plenty of superfoods, and some more unusual items like quartz sized coconut milk and vegan-friendly popsicles.

Located in the middle of South Beach, Under the Mango Tree on 6th Street has a relaxed ambiance and serves freshly pressed juice in addition to superfood wraps, acai bowls, and more.
