Interestingly, the swordfish will lose all of its teeth and scales by the time it reaches adulthood. Upon becoming an adult, it can explore the ocean with the confidence that it has few natural predators, the exceptions being killer whales, tunas, and sharks.
Even though the bills are known as swords and look a lot like a spear, the swordfish doesn’t actually use it for the purpose of spearing. Instead, the fish will use its bill to slash prey, resulting in injury and therefore making it easier to catch. Despite having this bill, the swordfish prefers to use its astounding speed and agility to hunt and will reserve the use of the bill when it’s time to take down larger prey.
