Get to Know the Swordfish

Even if you don’t spend much time in the sea, chances are you’re at least somewhat familiar with the swordfish. Commonly referred to as the broadbill in certain parts of the world, the swordfish is recognized for its size and its long, flat bill which does look a lot like a very sharp sword. Among billfish, the swordfish maintains a strong degree of popularity with sport and deep fishing enthusiasts.
You’ll find the swordfish swimming around in the warmer areas of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, usually not very far from the surface. It generally grows to about ten feet in length, though there have been instances of fishermen catching swordfish measuring close to fifteen feet! Interestingly, the swordfish will lose all of its teeth and scales by the time it reaches adulthood. Upon becoming an adult, it can explore the ocean with the confidence that it has few natural predators, the exceptions being killer whales, tunas, and sharks.
Even though the bills are known as swords and look a lot like a spear, the swordfish doesn’t actually use it for the purpose of spearing. Instead, the fish will use its bill to slash prey, resulting in injury and therefore making it easier to catch. Despite having this bill, the swordfish prefers to use its astounding speed and agility to hunt and will reserve the use of the bill when it’s time to take down larger prey.
