Today we’re continuing our exploration of sea dwellers by taking a look at one of the most fearsome fish in the sea: the barracuda. Known for its ferocious behavior, the barracuda is a ray-finned fish found in the world’s tropical and subtropical oceans, often hanging out close to coral reefs and sea grass.
Barracudas look a lot like snakes in appearance and are known for their fang-like teeth, a trait they share with piranhas. Interestingly, all of these sharp teeth are of different size. They are also recognized by their underbite. Some barracudas can grow to be quite large, growing up to five feet in length.
Besides their appearance, barracudas are notorious for their aggressive behavior. They are stealthy predators, preferring to surprise their prey before chasing them down with short bursts of speed. Adults usually spend their time alone while younger ones congregate. With their aggressiveness, barracuda are known for sometimes taking on prey larger than themselves by actually ripping off pieces of their flesh.
