Discover Tournament Fishing

As you can probably figure out from its name, tournament fishing is a competition among those who consider themselves anglers, it’s also referred to as a derby. These tournaments generally consist of various competitive events on a certain body of water such as a lake, river, or ocean, with each event having specific rules.
Prizes for fishing tournaments are based on the total weight of specific species of fish that have been caught within an allotted timeframe. There are, however, competitions that are based on fish length, where anglers are required to catch and release the fish. Many professional competitors are often commercially endorsed.
With the Internet becoming so prevalent, fishing tournaments are gaining popularity worldwide. Events can be held in multiple bodies of water or areas or even in multiple countries, allowing anglers that live hundreds of miles from each other to go after the same prize despite the great distance.

The Basics of Bottom Fishing

Perhaps the most common of fishing techniques, bottom fishing is a means of catching fish dwelling near the sea floor, just as its name suggests. Despite coming across as a lazy method of fishing, bottom fishing requires significant technique when it comes to drifting and anchoring. As fish such as the grouper and red snapper typically hang out near wrecks and reefs, bottom fishing is considered one of the most effective means of catching them.

Bottom fishing can be done from land or by boat using rods or handlines. The technique involves dropping the bait towards the sea bottom to attract the attention of fish and get them to grab onto the lure. Once the fish grabs the bait, it will feel the weight resistance and will bolt away, causing them to hook onto the bait hook. This weight is also helpful in making sure the bait stays put even if currents are strong.

On June 17, 2017 The Miami FC faced off against Jacksonville Armada FC on Saturday night, beating their in-state rivals 4-0 and extending their first-place lead to a comfortable seven points. Miami started the match with full control of the ball, as Jacksonville didn’t hold possession of it until the 2:20 mark of the match.
The Orange and Blue continued their forward offensive movements for the rest of the first half, coming close on several occasions but settling for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Substitute Ariel Martínez came into the match in the 68th minute and had a perfect match off the bench. Martinez wasted no time attempting a goal in the 70th minute, but chipping just off-target. Martínez would come close to tallying his first goal of the season with a beautiful cutback and shot that was cleared off the line in the 80th minute, five minutes later, Martínez would get his goal, hitting a right-footed rocket past the outstretched goalkeeper to give Miami three points and a 4-0 win.

The Beautiful Yet Powerful Bonito

Related to the tuna and mackerel, the bonito is a medium-sized predatory fish that also goes by the name of Sardini. Interestingly, the word bonito is also an adjective meaning “pretty” or “beautiful” in Spanish. Despite this, it’s believed that the name of the fish comes from the Italian “buono”, which means “good” or “bonus”. The name may be in reference to the bonito’s rich taste.
It may be a small fish and carry a “pretty” name, but the bonito is known for striking hard and it demands respect from those planning on attempting to snag one. To catch one, most fishermen use a straightforward approach. Upon grabbing the attention of a school of bonitos, they will latch onto just about any bait used.
The bonito is among the many unique species of fish dwelling in the cerulean waters of South Florida. If you think you’re ready to take on this tuna-like sea dweller, get ready for an unforgettable experience on the THERAPY-IV!

The Skillful Snapper

In terms of the variety of species, few fish probably match the unique snapper. More than 100 different species of this sea dweller exist, and some of these species are known for being important food fish. Snappers are typically found in tropical and subtropical areas of the world’s oceans.
Because of the vast variety of snapper, we’ll be focusing on the red snapper for purposes of this blog. Despite being relatively small, the red snapper is among the top sea dwelling predators. They are highly sought after by fishermen and are considered something of a delicacy in restaurants. The red snapper also has one of the longest lifespans of fish, living for over fifty years.
For those seeking a formidable challenge, the red snapper is no joke. Fishermen seek out the fish because of its ability to put up a strong fight against a fishing line. If you’re only beginning to get your feet wet with the red snapper, you may find yourself in for quite the challenge!

The Unusual Hammerhead Shark

The hammerhead shark is among the most easily recognizable fish in the ocean due to its unusually-shaped head that gives the fish its name. This shape is officially called a “cephalofoil”. Hammerheads are found all around the world in warm water.
Hammerhead sharks can be as small as three feet in length or just over nineteen feet. With their white bellies, they become harder to spot when viewed from the bottom, which allows them an advantage when hunting prey. Speaking of prey, contrary to the majority of sharks the hammerhead is usually seen swimming in large schools during the daylight hours before becoming a solitary hunter at night. Octopus, stingrays, other sharks, and squid are among the dietary items the hammerhead enjoys munching on.
The hammerhead’s cephalofoil is believed to allow the fish enhanced vision. Because of where the eyes are located, the hammerhead can see what’s above and below it at all times. This cephalofoil is particularly useful against stingrays, allowing the hammerhead to pin down its prey.

The Solitary Cobia

The cobia is a fish that goes by several different names including lemonfish, crabeater, black salmon, and perhaps most curiously, the prodigal son. It can weigh more than 170 pounds and measure nearly seventy inches in length. It is recognized by its elongated spindle-shaped body, dark brown color, and the dorsal fin containing anywhere from six to nine short and sharp spines. Because of its shape and large pectoral fins, the fish looks a lot like a shark.
Typically loners, the only time the cobia is seen among fellow cobia is during the annual spawning aggregations. There are, however, rare occasions where it will also congregate near a reef, buoy, or a wreck. When releasing eggs, the larvae are born as plankton of sorts and are considered helpless during their first week of hatching until they finally develop their eyes and mouths. Both male and female cobia can live up to fifteen years or more.
Cobia is considered a superb game fish and maintains strong appeal among recreational fishers. It is known for its power, which makes it one of the more challenging and exciting fish to catch.
