Get Down with Some Great Music This Week

The heat may have a lot of people spending most of their time at the beach, but South Florida’s various musical events continue to draw crowds. Let’s check out some of the events going on.
The late Jerry Garcia was a singer-songwriter perhaps best known for his work with the influential band Grateful Dead. Tomorrow, The Wynwood Yard will celebrate Jerry Garcia Day featuring Unlimited Devotion beginning at 8 pm. Best of all, there is no fee to attend.
If you’re more of a jazz fan, check out Nicole & Senegal Jazz Duo over at Le Chat Noir on Miami Avenue, also at 8 pm. Just like Jerry Garcia Day, there is no cost to enjoy the music.
Singer and songwriter Khalid Robinson (known mononymous as Khalid) is currently touring in support of his debut studio album American Teen released in March. Khalid is perhaps best known for his Billboard top twenty single “Location”. Khalid: The American Teen Tour will make a stop at The Fillmore in Miami Beach on Wednesday at 8 pm. Tickets range from $25 to $40.
Fans of the late Whitney Houston may want to set aside some time on Friday to check out the “Dance with Somebody” Whitney Houston Tribute at the Shelborne South Beach. The event kicks off at 8 pm until 1 am and once again, there is no cost to attend.

Jezebel Opens in Miami Beach

For those of you seeking a new place to try this weekend in Miami Beach, you may wish to visit the 2,300 square-foot Jezebel Bar + Kitchen. The restaurant and cocktail lounge will open its doors tomorrow in the space that once served as the home of Bacaro, Halo, and Mova.
Unlike clubs/lounges that serve food for a limited amount of time, Jezebel guests can dine on foods such as mini lobster tacos, flaming s’mores, and Jezebel wings from 5 pm until the wee hours of the morning (5 am). Besides the food, Jezebel’s selection of drinks will offer plenty of variety. Try the Julio Reposado Tequila, the Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic, or maybe the El Chapo starring Illegal Mezcal.
The interior design of Jezebel is a collaborative work between François Frossard and Liquid Hospitality. Upon walking in, guests will notice an intriguing fusion of Wynwood meets speakeasy, with vintage furniture, street art provided by the talented Miguel Paredes, and more.
Jezebel’s hours of operation are from 5 pm to 5 am and it is open every day of the week. Its address is 1625 Michigan Avenue.

Choosing Your Charter Boat

Getting started with chartering a boat to explore the deep seas may seem like a daunting task for the inexperienced. Once you understand the different types of charters available, the decision becomes tremendously easier.
If you’re just getting your feet wet, a half-day charter might be a good way to start. These charters last about four hours which allows enough time to familiarize yourself with the basics as well as catch lots of fish. You can opt for a morning or afternoon trip or you can always choose a full day experience.
Shared charters are a great way to meet new people. Most charter fishing boats allow for a maximum of six people. Instead of charging you for the extra/empty seats, we can fill in the empty ones so others can enjoy the experience.
For those seeking something intimate, private charters are also an option. Spend the day at sea with your significant other and we’ll try our best to accommodate your needs.
Corporate days at sea are a unique, fantastic way of sharing experiences with your colleagues while strengthening employee relationships and improving team building. We can organize multiple boats for large corporate groups.

Are You Ready to Go Shark Fishing?

In terms of adventure and thrill, the excitement probably reaches its apex with shark fishing. For those seeking to test their skills against these intimidating predators, it’s an incredible ride. The Gulf Stream is full of various sharks to catch, from the massive hammerhead and blacktip to the fearsome tiger shark.
Fishing gear has evolved significantly to where you can potentially get away with snagging a shark using smaller rods and reels. However, not having the right rods could result in lots of frustration, so you want to make sure your gear can withstand the massive strength of a shark. As for bait, bluefish and mackerel are good options, though you could also go with amberjack, cobia, or kingfish. And while it may seem common sense, strongly refrain from placing your fingers anywhere near a shark’s mouth. Even the slightest shark twitch could cause a shark’s mouth to clamp down on your digits.
Shark fishing requires not only technique but also having the right gear, especially gear that will protect you from South Florida’s blazing sunshine. If you’d like some help with getting your shark fishing feet wet, definitely set up an experience on the THERAPY-IV!

Getting Started with Reef Fishing

A successful reef fishing trip begins with finding where the reefs are, something that can be significantly simplified with the use of a depth finder. Maps are also a classic solution as many of these have GPS coordinates.
As with any type of fishing, there is no guarantee of consistency with reef fishing. A reef may be teeming with fish one day and then become sparse the next. However, major reefs are generally a more reliable bet and are typically swarming with various fish types.
Besides the reef location, the weather will also factor heavily in how successful your reef fishing trip is, particularly the wind as that will affect the tide and current speed. Boats need to be able to remain over the reef while remaining steady to ensure an optimum fishing experience. Hence, if you’re just getting your feet wet with reef fishing it’s best to stick to familiar waters or use an experienced guide.
Heavy action fishing rods are imperative to a successful reef fishing experience if you’re looking to catch something of decent size. Spinning gear works, but you’re definitely going to want a free spooling trolling reel.

What’s Wreck Fishing All About?

When you read or hear the term “wreck fishing”, you may think of the old days of swashbuckling pirates. The modern interpretation of wreck fishing includes not only shipwrecks but also artificial reefs and rough bottom fishing area.

With wreck fishing, perhaps the toughest part is indeed finding a structure to fish at. This requires taking the time to thoroughly research which areas have the best potential for fish. Thankfully, there are numerous resources to help you find the ideal spots, especially when it comes to artificial reefs.

Finding wrecks can be a little tricky, but it does yield great rewards provided you’re patient enough. A GPS is essential to help pinpoint the correct location. Modern GPS units have become highly accurate within about three to five meters, making it much easier to find wrecks and reefs without being too far off.

South Florida abounds in wreck fishing opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. Some of the fish you may come across or catch include mackerel, sea bass, grouper, and more. Jig fishing, live bait, and chicken rigs are also effective in finding fish hanging out near wrecks.

Captain Stan has numerous years of experience with wreck fishing and he has even assisted the agencies in charge of sinking many of the wrecks for the Dade County Artificial Reef Program and the Broward County Artificial Reef Program. Get in touch with him and prepare for something uniquely exciting!

Saltwater Fishing Tips

To enjoy a great saltwater fishing experience you’re going to need to begin with the foundations: a good reel and rod. With so many different types to choose from, you’re also going to have to narrow down your selection. Surf fishing, pier fishing, deep sea fishing, and saltwater bay fishing are a few examples of different types that fall under the umbrella of saltwater fishing.
For those that already have some level of experience with saltwater fishing, there are some tips that might help with your next big catch. The Bimini Twist or Twenty-Times-Around Knot is considered the only knot capable of maintaining full strength under virtually any condition. As for lures, fish are known to bite best on those that appear bright and new.
Speaking of lures, it may be wisest to allow a second or two for a fish to have the bait in its mouth prior to setting the hook if circumstances allow. If the fish is visible, wait until the lure disappears inside the mouth of the fish. If you’re having trouble determining the right time to hook, do it when a significant amount of pressure is coming from the line because of the fish.
