It’s not quite on the level of the Kentucky Derby just yet, but the Pegasus World Cup Invitational is quickly becoming just as popular. The American Thoroughbred horse race is a newcomer, holding its first race last year at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. With a handsome purse of $12 million, it managed to outdo none other than the Dubai World Cup as the world’s richest horse race.
The Pegasus World Cup is open to horses that are at least four years old and the race involves running over the dirt for a distance about 1 1⁄8 miles. Each horse must carry a total of 124 pounds, with fillies and mares receiving a three-pound allowance. As for the name of the race, it comes from the mythical winged horse popular in Greek mythology.
This year’s Pegasus World Cup is being held this Saturday, January 27th. The purse has been upped to $16 million and the race will include twelve horses with names like Fear the Cowboy, Seeking the Soul, War Story, and Toast of New York.
