Now Is the Time to Take on the Tarpon

Will you be doing any fishing in the Florida Keys? If so, you may wish to consider the tarpon, which remains a popular catch. In fact, until the end of June comes around, it’s a great time to catch and release the fish also going by the name of Silver King.
What makes tarpon so popular is its unwillingness to be caught without putting up a strong fight. For game fishing, these sea dwellers are large, they’ll jump if they need to and they will give experienced fishing aficionados a challenging time that will put their skills to the test. Tarpon are also fairly easy to spot in a few feet of water, which adds to the thrill of throwing out a lure and watching the fish latch onto it, initiating a challenge that will leave first time tarpon fishers with a formidable sense of just how powerful and large the fish is.
Are you ready to take on South Florida’s many impressive sea dwellers like the tarpon? Book your fishing trip and get ready for a thrill.

Forty Days of Red Snapper

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation (FWC) has announced that it will implement a four-day season for fishing red snapper in both federal and state waters off Florida’s coast starting on June 11. This is one of the measures that have been used to prevent overfishing. Allowing only a certain amount of days to fish certain species also allows them to breed and reproduce the rest of the year.
The National Marine Fisheries Service proposed limiting the red snapper season in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, where fishing them has been off limits since 2014, to only two weekends at the end of the year. The FWC will consider approving a proposal at a meeting in Fort Lauderdale on April 26 requiring for-hire operations licensed to catch and harvest certain reef fish to report their intention to do so.
Florida is not the only state where these changes are going into effect. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas also have several variations of rules and regulations.

Remembering Barbara Bush

The country is mourning the loss of former First Lady of the United States Barbara Bush, who passed away yesterday at the age of 92. Bush was the wife of George H. W. Bush (currently the oldest living President) and the mother of George W. Bush, who served as the 41st and the 43rd Presidents of the United States, respectively. Barbara was also the mother of former Florid Governor John Ellis "Jeb" Bush Sr.
Barbara Bush immediately established herself as a different kind of first lady from the moment she took the position. She became known for her self-deprecating humor, her willingness to laugh at herself, and she was not opposed to wearing fake pearls, a stark contrast to former first lady Nancy Reagan who was known for being very glamorous and always carrying an aura of utmost poise. These traits painted Barbara as a down-to-earth person.
When her husband George decided to dip his toes into politics, Barbara took the reins and developed a reputation for her fierce campaigning and steadfast dedication, which earned her the nicknames of “Silver Fox” and “The Enforcer” among her grandchildren. She was also not opposed to sharing her honest two cents when asked for her opinion.
While Barbara Bush had a unique personality, she was also highly praised and admired for her astute faithfulness to promoting literacy which she believed would solve a myriad of problems. In 1989 she established the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.
Rest in peace, Barbara Bush.

Art and Music Events in Miami This Week

Another week brings another fresh collection of free or low-cost events happening in Miami and beyond. Without further ado, let’s explore some of the highlights.
More than fifteen bands and over 100 artists and crafters will be hanging out around Wynwood when the Wynwood Life 2018 event kicks off on Friday. Art galleries, food trucks, street artists, it doesn’t get any more artistic than this three-day event ending on Sunday, April 22. There is no cost to attend so bring your enthusiasm and support the creativity of some of South Florida’s finest artists.
In keeping with the focus on art, the Wolfsonian in Miami Beach will host the PosterFest event on Saturday, April 21 featuring workshops, presentations, exhibits, and more centered around iconic images. Think of classic posters that have left lasting memories, like the Barack Obama Hope graphics that became so iconic or Uncle Sam proclaiming he wants you for the U.S. Army.
Record store days are quite popular as vinyl continues its mainstream resurgence. Technique Records in Miami is hosting its own inaugural Record Store Day in a grandiose way. Acclaimed American DJ and record producer Diplo will be making an appearance signing books and records. If you arrive early enough you’ll be eligible to receive some exclusive releases and if you’re among the first 100 people who make a purchase, you’ll also receive a snazzy tote bag. You can also attend knowing that a portion of the proceeds will go towards the Broward Education Foundation's Marjory Stoneman Douglas Victims' Fund. The fun begins on Saturday at 8 am.

Pay a Visit to Lincoln Road

When is the last time you visited Lincoln Road? The popular tourist area may be a tad crowded on the weekends and you may have to deal with overzealous hostesses trying to get you to eat at their restaurant, but overall Lincoln Road has its appeal. Even if you aren’t a tourist, locals will find plenty to still love about the perennially popular thoroughfare.
Let’s begin with the Colony Theatre. This Miami Beach mainstay is still one of the few places where you can check out great performances that tend to go under the radar such as a Cuban and Haitian version of the classic play “Our Town”. The theatre will kick off an all-new production called “Queen of Basel” on Saturday.
When you want to find those obscure titles that aren’t available at your local Barnes & Noble, Miami people know the best place to go is Books & Books. If you haven’t been to the one in Coral Gables, the Miami Beach location is definitely worth a visit.
Being accosted by hostesses may be a common occurrence, but that’s not the case at Spris and Rosinella. You can also look forward to happy hour from 5 to 7 pm at Balans.

A Pair of Great Miami Beach Restaurants

For those of you looking to broaden your palate and add to your existing list of different eateries to try, let’s explore some of the coolest restaurants currently attracting patrons in South Florida. You’ll find two of these places right here in Miami Beach.
We’ll begin with Planta a vegan-friendly restaurant hailing from Toronto located on Commerce Street. The extensive menu includes a large array of menu options, inducing cauliflower tots, dehydrated watermelon, pasta, “meat lovers” pizza, and much more. All of these animal product and meat free foods are complemented by a variety of healthy drinks such as carrot juice.
You may have heard about Azabu Miami Beach which has been generating lots of buzz since opening its doors. The Michelin honored New York import has several different dining options from the full-service dining room to The Den, a “hidden” counter serving up plenty of sushi. Azabu is located right on popular Ocean Drive.

Free Post-Easter Events in Miami and Miami Beach

If you spent a lot of money during your Easter festivities, this week’s events won’t require shelling out a ton of money to enjoy. Let’s begin.
Just about everyone loves the beach, but not everyone does their part to make sure it stays protected and free of trash and debris. The Water Is Everything event is all about educating the public on how plastic is affecting the ocean. The two-day event includes a beach clean up, poolside party, a documentary screening, and an ocean trawling expedition aimed at drawing attention to the problem. The beach cleanup is happening on Wednesday at 10 am at the 24th Street beach entrance while the pool party is going down on at the 1 Hotel South Beach pool on Thursday. Admission is also free but you must RSVP.
Over in Miami, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts will host SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) on Saturday at 6 pm. As its name implies, it is all about celebrating women in the arts including poets, dancers, comedians, musicians, and more. The event will spotlight over nine different female artists and you’re more than welcome to attend.
