Wahoo! How to Catch These Speedy Fish

There’s not many fish in the ocean that can spool out a reel like a swift wahoo can and it’s safe to say that their name is also derived as an exclamation for their blistering speed. Easily reaching speeds above 60 mph, the wahoo is widely considered to be the fastest swimming fish in the ocean. Now if you are into adrenaline-packed adventure, then this guide will help ensure you get hooked up!
It has been established that the wahoo’s swimming speed is something to respect, but so is your trolling speed. The ideal trolling speed for triggering a bite is around 15 knots and there is never any point to going slower. In fact, you can even expect to land a wahoo with trolling speeds as fast as 22 knots.
Maintaining a proper trolling speed can certainly be enticing to these trophy fish but do not expect any landings without the proper tackle setup. Typically, running a six-lure spread will be sufficient but feel free to run up to nine for an even better chance of hooking up. The key to a striking lure spread is ensuring that each lure is set at different lengths from 150 feet to 450 feet.
Now once you have your trolling speed and lure spread mastered, it is important to react correctly to a guaranteed wahoo strike. When the fish strikes, clear everything that is not a rod and be prepared for another strike within your spread. Always turn toward the fish to keep it clear of other lines and brace yourself for the fight of your life!

FWC Looks to Change Florida Fishing Rules on Sharks

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission directed its staff members to propose new rules regarding shark fishing. As its name implies, shark fishing is usually shore-based and they are attracted to areas with low visibility in the water as well as where plenty of swimmers go. Commisioner Michael Sole, a former secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, has stated that a permit for such fishing should be part of any rule change. They should also include clear outlines on how to apply for these licenses as well as the recommended safety procedures and parameters for fishing. Don’t expect any changes to occur anytime soon; creating new rules requires public input and workshops. State law also prohibits local governments from enacting bans themselves.
Shark fishing has become more popular in recent years and despite concerns, it has not impacted their population. Despite this, the state has sought to maintain and preserve them, as they are a necessary apex predator for our marine ecosystem.

The Indy 500 Returns This Weekend

Rev up your engines, ladies and gentlemen! The annual Indianapolis 500 (also known as Indy 500) is returning this Sunday, May 27 to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway once again. In case you’ve never heard of the famous race, let’s provide a brief overview.
The first Indy 500 was held in 1911. Today, its referred to as The Greatest Spectacle in Racing and its prestige is on the same level as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Monaco Grand Prix events, which, along with the Indy 500, comprise the Triple Crown of Motorsport. In 2011, the race celebrated its 100thanniversary and two years ago, it also celebrated its 100th running. Drivers race for a total of 200 laps around an oval-shaped circuit spanning just over two miles.
Currently, the active driver who has achieved the most Indy 500 victories is Hélio Castroneves. He is also one of a mere five drivers that have earned the distinction of having won back-to-back Indy 500 races.

Therapy-IV Celebrates National Police Week

Police Week, or known more formally as Peace Officers Memorial Day, is an observance in the U.S. that pays tribute to federal, state, and local officers who have been slain or disabled in the line of duty. While it may only occur annually on May 15, the week of it is celebrated in Washington D.C, where thousands of law enforcement officials congregate for a candlelight vigil, wreath laying ceremony, and what is known as a “Blue Mass”. The Grand Lodge of the National Fraternal Order of Police sponsors all of this.
This holiday was created back in October of 1962, when President John F. Kennedy signed a bill into law designating a day for honoring fallen police officers. President Bill Clinton, who directed that the American flag be flown at half-staff later amended it in 1994. The actual memorial service actually began in 1982.
Therapy-IV is proud to stand behind the brave men and women who are out there every day risking their lives to execute what they pledge to do: serve and protect.

Summer South Florida Fishing Hotspot

Many people seek out a summer fishing hotspot that ensures they will hook onto a monstrous trophy fish. With that said, it is widely known that Miami is a prime location for saltwater fishing and Miami summertime fishing is no exception due to the influx of warm waters. People flock to Miami during summers not only because they are in search of beautiful sunny weather but also for the chance to experience the insane adrenaline rush from hooking onto a saltwater fish.
Among the many forms of saltwater fishing, deep sea fishing captures a whole new realm of excitement. With many new and adventurous challenges that are presented with deep sea fishing, it is highly evident that fishing in deep waters draws the most thrills. During the summer season, a few popular methods to catching deep sea fish are trolling lures, dead bait or a combination of both. With these techniques during the summer season, one can expect to catch sailfish, blue marlin, wahoo, and even dolphin (mahi-mahi).

Stay Cool in the Pool

The summer is soon to arrive and if there is one way to keep cool from the summer temperatures, it’s spending a day at the pool. Miami Beach has lots of fun spots to enjoy a pool party day, and these places will definitely allow you some great fun in the sun.
The beach is fantastic but if you’d rather not deal with getting sand all over you, the Standard has an infinity pool plus an improvised beach that includes just about everything but the pesky sand. Speaking of the pool, it boasts an underwater sound system. If you’re feeling truly adventurous, you’ll also find a mini pool called the Arctic Plunge which is kept at an absolutely frigid fifty degrees! Once it’s time to wind down, the Roman waterfall hot tub is just the thing.
If you’re only visiting Miami for the warmer weather, you should definitely make some time to marvel at the majesty of a Miami sunset. The 1 Hotel South Beach Rooftop has a pool open to hotel guests that’s perfect for an afternoon as the sun sets on another fine day. During the weekends, DJs liven up the atmosphere. Even if you aren’t a guest, you can still rent a cabana.

Washington Avenue Set for Major Makeover

At one point in its lifetime, Miami Beach’s Washington Avenue was the epicenter of entertainment back when South Beach was still transitioning from a quiet Art Deco paradise into the bustling party scene it has since become. As South Beach grew, attention turned from Washington Avenue to Ocean Drive, which has since become synonymous with South Beach.
Washington Avenue will soon be receiving the attention it deserves now that Miami Beach has designated the stretch from Fifth to 17th streets as a Business Improvement District, a designation it will retain for the next decade. With this BID designation, Washington Avenue will be receiving a facelift which includes beautification and renovations. Some of the projects in store include new hotels and retail as well as office and residential space.
Back in 2005, Washington Avenue also underwent improvements which were centered resurfacing the roads, adding new streetlights, and making drainage improvements. With this new initiative, it may return to the glory it once had in the early 1990s.

All Aboard for Fleet Week

Have you heard of Fleet Week? It’s one of the most popular events in South Florida, drawing thousands of local students, veterans, and residents eager to explore some of the vessels used by the United States Navy and Coast Guard. While a large portion of Fleet Week is aimed at bringing the community to come aboard, it also serves as an opportunity for military members and sailors to spend some time on land and share their experience with the community.
One of the most important events held during Fleet Week is the Pearl Harbor memorial service typically held at the Fort Lauderdale Coast Guard Station. As the remaining Pearl Harbor survivors become smaller with the passage of time, part of Fleet Week serves as a way to preserve the importance of memory of the attack that resulted in the United States becoming a part of World War II.

Events This Weekend: The Kentucky Derby

The 2018 Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, and it will cap off the preceding festival in Louisville. It is the first component of the Triple Crown, followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. The event is often called the “Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” as well as the Holy Grail of gambling. It carries the highest risk but possibly the biggest reward given the variety of twenty unpredictable horses. They are the result of a culmination of years of effort to breed the perfect champion. For most of this year’s hopefuls, that process began in the Bluegrass.
Seventeen of the twenty contenders for the 144th Run for the Roses were born near Lexington, Kentucky. And Audible, though a New York-bred, was quickly shipped after birth to grow up on a Central Kentucky horse farm. The only two other Derby contenders this year born outside Kentucky are Firenze Fire (Florida) and Flameaway (Canada). The last foreign-born horse to win the Derby was Sunny’s Halo (Canada) in 1983.
Watch this Saturday, best of luck to those who bet, and may the best horse win.
