It has been established that the wahoo’s swimming speed is something to respect, but so is your trolling speed. The ideal trolling speed for triggering a bite is around 15 knots and there is never any point to going slower. In fact, you can even expect to land a wahoo with trolling speeds as fast as 22 knots.
Maintaining a proper trolling speed can certainly be enticing to these trophy fish but do not expect any landings without the proper tackle setup. Typically, running a six-lure spread will be sufficient but feel free to run up to nine for an even better chance of hooking up. The key to a striking lure spread is ensuring that each lure is set at different lengths from 150 feet to 450 feet.
Now once you have your trolling speed and lure spread mastered, it is important to react correctly to a guaranteed wahoo strike. When the fish strikes, clear everything that is not a rod and be prepared for another strike within your spread. Always turn toward the fish to keep it clear of other lines and brace yourself for the fight of your life!
