The 2018 Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, and it will cap off the preceding festival in Louisville. It is the first component of the Triple Crown, followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. The event is often called the “Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” as well as the Holy Grail of gambling. It carries the highest risk but possibly the biggest reward given the variety of twenty unpredictable horses. They are the result of a culmination of years of effort to breed the perfect champion. For most of this year’s hopefuls, that process began in the Bluegrass.
Seventeen of the twenty contenders for the 144th Run for the Roses were born near Lexington, Kentucky. And Audible, though a New York-bred, was quickly shipped after birth to grow up on a Central Kentucky horse farm. The only two other Derby contenders this year born outside Kentucky are Firenze Fire (Florida) and Flameaway (Canada). The last foreign-born horse to win the Derby was Sunny’s Halo (Canada) in 1983.
Watch this Saturday, best of luck to those who bet, and may the best horse win.
