Police Week, or known more formally as Peace Officers Memorial Day, is an observance in the U.S. that pays tribute to federal, state, and local officers who have been slain or disabled in the line of duty. While it may only occur annually on May 15, the week of it is celebrated in Washington D.C, where thousands of law enforcement officials congregate for a candlelight vigil, wreath laying ceremony, and what is known as a “Blue Mass”. The Grand Lodge of the National Fraternal Order of Police sponsors all of this.
This holiday was created back in October of 1962, when President John F. Kennedy signed a bill into law designating a day for honoring fallen police officers. President Bill Clinton, who directed that the American flag be flown at half-staff later amended it in 1994. The actual memorial service actually began in 1982.
