The Miami Art Celebrations Are on the Horizon

Happy Monday! While we continue to recover from the long weekend, South Florida is gearing up for one of its most exciting and popular events: Miami Art Week! Next week marks the return of Art Basel, as well as several other notable art fairs.
Of all the art fairs, Art Basel remains the biggest. Over 200 galleries are expected to make an appearance at the revamped Miami Beach Convention Center as part of one of six different sections. Artist Abraham Cruzvillegas is also showcasing his work as a replacement to the Public Art Program. For those into furniture design, Design Miami is being held adjacent to the Miami Beach Convention Center and features artist-made object plus various partnerships with other institutions.
Art Miami is returning for its 29th edition this year and will be held at its new home in the downtown area of Miami near the water. Among its many notable works, the fair will include an exhibition curated by actress and model Brooke Shields.
CONTEXT Art Miami is a fairly recent fair held near Art Miami. More than ninety galleries from around the world will be showcasing work and if the past is any indication, expect to see over 70,000 visitors this year.

Get Your Thanksgiving Pie

No Thanksgiving celebration is complete with some delicious pie. Whether you opt for apple, pumpkin, pecan pie, or something else, there are several places in Miami and beyond selling pies just in time for the holiday. Don’t wait too long as they may be sold out!
Right here in Miami Beach, Joe’s Stone Crab is a longtime South Florida favorite. Its key lime pie has achieved something of a legendary status and it can even be delivered right to your door and there is no preorder necessary. All you need to do is use Joe’s Takeaway to get your pie.
Bunnie Cakes on Second Avenue in Miami has a broad selection of pies, most of which are also available in vegan and gluten-free options. If you’d rather not go for something like sweet potato and marshmallow pie, you can choose something like cinnamon coffee cake or Thanksgiving cupcakes.
It’s already acclaimed for its incredible cinnamon rolls and the long lines people make to wait for them, but Knaus Berry Farms in Homestead also sells freshly baked pies. Go for key lime, stick with a classic pecan, or try the fruit-filled. You’ll have until Wednesday.

South Florida Honors Veterans

Today, we are honoring the numerous brave men and women that served in the United States Armed Forces. Although Veterans Day was actually yesterday, the day is being observed throughout the United States today. Lots of places in Miami-Dade County are holding events or doing something special to honor all of these courageous individuals.
For those that like the menu offerings of IHOP, the chain is is serving a free Red, White, and Blueberry Pancake Combo to all customers that are veterans or happen to be serving as active duty military until 7 pm tonight. Over in Miami Gardens, the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex Auditorium is having a Veterans Day lunch which is still in effect until 2 pm.
Right here in Miami Beach, the Veterans Day-themed events happened yesterday with military fly-overs in addition to a family picnic. During the events of World War I, Miami Beach’s hotels and beaches were important in serving as home bases for soldiers. Ocean Drive also held its customary parade which today features thousands of participants, a far cry from its initial starts when just fifty people participated.

Miami Makes Its Fishing Debut on Nat Geo Wild

Nature lovers are probably quite familiar with the Nat Geo Network and its host of wildlife-themed television shows. The network recently set its sights on none other than the Magic City of Miami as part of its six-episode series titled “Fish My City”.
“Fish My City” delved deep into Miami’s many waterways and canals as fishermen sought to catch several classic and exotic species of fish. During the Miami episode which aired late last month, fisherman Mike Iaconelli met up with fellow fishing aficionados to catch fish like the exotic midas cichlid and peacock bass as well as South Florida’s popular sea dwellers like the tarpon and snook. Each time the fishermen caught one, Iaconelli would take a moment to explain the fish and its history. For example, the grass carp was a gift of sorts from Asia intended to tackle a weed invasion.
The Miami episode of “Fish My City” has already aired. If you missed it, you can more than likely find it online.
