A New Rail May Be in the Works

Have you ever wished there more ways to get to and from Miami Beach and the downtown area than the Julia Tuttle, MacArthur, and the Venetian? If so, you may be interested in a new form of transportation being evaluated today by the Miami Dade County Commission.
A proposal dubbed the Beach Connector is being evaluated which would consist of a rail connecting downtown and Miami Beach. The project has been floating around in some form for more than two decades but has yet to be approved. As tourism continues to break records and younger generations rely less on driving, another way to get around from South Florida’s ultra popular barrier island could prove useful in easing Florida’s traffic infrastructure. Furthermore, it could go a tremendously long way in easing the woes many locals and tourists face when trying to find parking on the beach, which is easier said than done on weekends and holidays.
There is still a long way to go before the Beach Connector will clear all of the hurdles necessary for it to become reality. Do you think it would ease the connection between Miami and the beach?
THERAPY-IV, a Miami deep sea fishing boat service, brought this update to you. This charter provides all of their clientele with a high-end deep sea fishing experience. With their luxury yacht, exceptional customer service and experienced and professional Captain and crew, visitors can rest easy, they will not only have a memorable fishing experience but will also have the pleasure of visiting the best spots off the coast of Miami and Biscayne Bay. Better Fishing with Polarized Sunglasses

During a deep sea fishing trip, your eyes need protection from the blinding rays of the sun. The glare from the rays as they reflect off of the surface of the water can damage your vision or make it harder to spot fish and reel them in.
When you’re figuring out which sunglasses are ideal for you you may wish to consider what kind of fish you intend to catch, such as grouper or mackerel, for instance. Also, take the time to check out the color of the lens and the lens material. With polarized sunglasses, for example, they feature a special layer that can block the majority of refracted sunlight. With these lenses, rays reflecting off of the surface of the water won’t cause massive glare as you’re looking into the ocean to spot a catch or admiring the natural vistas. Blue lenses are a safe bet for deep sea fishing. A blue outer lens color combined with an inner gray lens will suit most anglers. The lens mirroring takes care of the glare.
Speaking of fishing sunglasses, resist the urge to buy them online. Polarized sunglasses have to be comfortable and fit the face correctly. You don’t want glare leaking into your field of view, which defeats the purpose of having bought polarized glasses. The better the sunglasses accommodate the face, the better your vision will be. As a result, you may find it’s not as difficult to tackle big game fish.

A Brief Glimpse into Biscayne Bay

When you want to enjoy some inshore fishing, Biscayne Bay in Miami is worthy of your time. Complemented by the glitz and glam of Miami and Miami Beach, this gorgeous bay provides world-class fishing and has been doing so for decades.
Biscayne Bay runs from North Miami all the way to Key Largo and is comprised of nearly 430 square miles of water, close to the size of the city of San Antonio! More than 250 acres of the bay is protected by the Biscayne National Park, which was established back in the 1980s.
Even as South Florida undergoes changes and evolves, Biscayne Bay is home to many different gamefish that have earned a degree of popularity, including bonefish, tarpon, snapper, mackerel, sharks and even some grouper here and there. Because of the richly broad array of fish, anglers may find it tricky to concentrate their efforts on a certain species.
Ready to explore Biscayne Bay? Book your fishing boat trip on the THERAPY-IV today.

Mother Nature’s Effect on Fishing

When it comes to advice, fishing is one of those topics where everyone is ready and willing to provide an exhaustive amount of advice. Whether it’s what you should be wearing, where the best spots to fish are, information regarding fishing is aplenty. For this blog, we’re going to take a closer look at the weather.

Let’s use something like the wind, for instance. The wind will push water and surface food away from the shore, depending on the strength. Certain fish types like baitfish will swim along with the movement of the food, which means it may be harder to catch the fish due to the windy conditions and the bait not staying “staying still”.

Fish are highly sensitive to the smallest changes in the weather. You may notice them feeding voraciously a few hours prior to the arrival of a cold front. The feeding will in most cases slow down once a storm has come and gone. After a cold front, fish activity may be low.

The idea of getting drenched may not sound appealing but fishing during the rain can reap great rewards. The rain assists with breaking up the view that the fish have through the surface of the water, which means potentially greater odds of a catch.

Fishing Law Aims to Protect Sharks

Fun fact: Did you know that there are over 500 different species of shark around the world? A number of these species have laws in place intended to protect them, which means anyone fishing for them is required to release them back into the ocean if caught. Here in Florida, the state is also looking to ramp up its efforts to protect these sea dwellers with a recent law implemented last month.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) must grant shore anglers a special permit, which includes becoming familiar with the shark’s habits and learning more about it via an online shark-fishing education course. The law is intended as much to protect the sharks as it is to protect humans. It prohibits anglers from bringing the sharks near the shore, requiring them to release the shark immediately after catching.
Though the FWC shark law is aimed largely at shore fishing, it also includes restrictions for those planning on fishing from bridges, piers, or jetties. Young anglers below the age of sixteen do not have to receive a permit, but they are still required to take the education course or be accompanied by an adult who already has the shore-based license.

Get into the Fourth of July Mood at These Miami Beach Events

The days are warmer, longer, and there is (slightly) less traffic, all signs of summer in South Florida. While the season is officially here, it doesn’t really begin until after Independence Day. With that in mind, there are several different events going on to help you ring in the “official” start of the summer.
Tomorrow, 27 Restaurant & Bar on Indian Creek Drive is hosting the CLASSy Natural Wine Night where you can sip on various drinks at a discounted price. Try some drinks coming all the way from Italy or take a crash course in wine by attending the class which kicks off at 6:30 and costs just $15. The event itself is free.
Head over to RWSB on Collins Avenue the day before Independence Day to be a part of the summer barbecue kick off featuring food prepared by guest chefs Janine Booth and Jeff McInnis. The event begins at 6:30 and tickets are $40. Seating is limited so you may wish to consider purchasing in advance. Should there be enough space, walk-ins are welcome.

After Fishing, Go for Some Miami Ice Cream

Have you made any summer plans yet? Perhaps you’re thinking of ways to complement your cool deep sea fishing experience on the THERAPY-IV. If you plan on spending any time in the barrier island and are looking for other ways to stay cool in South Florida, consider exploring some of the Miami ice cream shops that offer a great for the whole family, much like a deep sea fishing trip.
We’ll begin with two spots just west of Miami Beach. MadLab Creamery on 39th Street has become known for its one of a kind ice creams that use toppings such as edible glitter, Japanese cheesecake, and more. The setting is ideal for sharing on social media.
Just north of MadLab Creamery on 41st Street is Aubi & Ramsa which offers something a little more adult-oriented. Try the Kentucky crème brulee infused with bourbon or perhaps the chocolate Aztec with Del Maguey Vida mezcal.
Unlike most ice cream places, Lulu’s Nitrogen Ice Cream in the Edgewater neighborhood makes its ice cream on the spot. Choose your flavor, your mix-ins, and then marvel as the ice cream is created right before your eyes courtesy of a little liquid nitrogen.

Set Sail for Miami’s New Reef

Are you eager to do any fishing in Key Biscayne any time soon? Avid anglers in South Florida will now have another option to choose from the next time they may be passing through the waters of Biscayne Bay. Miami-Dade County and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission have joined forces to reveal a new artificial reef made from more than 130 tons of limerock boulders and clean concrete.
Dubbed Bug Light Shoal, this all-new reef will assist with providing access and opportunities for anglers to catch bait before they venture off into offshore waters. If the name of the reef happens to sound somewhat familiar, it was the nickname given to Biscayne Bay’s decommissioned navigational marker which, for decades, was a haven for bait fish.
To reach Bug Light Shoal, you’ll need to head about 2.4 nautical miles east northeast of the Cape Florida Lighthouse towards a depth of 22 feet. The lighthouse is part of Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.

Tarpon Fishing in Miami

Among the many sea dwellers that prove to be a challenge, the tarpon is certainly among them. In fact, anglers can spend their entire lives perfecting their tarpon fishing technique due to the fish’s unpredictability and stubbornness.
Tarpon is known for its aerial acrobatics, but if you want to see it in action then it’s important to know when and where to look. Here in Miami, the fish is most active during the months of January through May, and they start to dwindle after July. Some spots where you may be able to catch them include Government Cut and Haulover Inlet.
Mullet and small crabs make for good tarpon bait, but runs of shrimp that often occur during the winter will certainly work. Tarpon feeds at all hours of the day, but if you’re intrepid enough to go fishing at night, the fish becomes less wary because it won’t be able to notice the fishing lines due to the darkness.
If you want to try catching tarpon, book your summer deep sea fishing trip on the THERAPY-IV today.

Enjoy ReFrame in Miami Beach This Memorial Day Weekend

For those of you that don’t plan on heading to one of the Miami Beach parties this Memorial Day weekend, there is another event you may wish to consider visiting that doesn’t involve too many raucous crowds. The city’s first arts and cultural festival begins today and continues this weekend.
Dubbed ReFrame, the festival will provide a showcase of various artwork by local artists, with a common thread of discussing and sparking conversation on hot topics like relationships, inclusion, and more.
ReFrame is kicking things off with the “I See You, Too” exhibit which features works by artists like Rodney Jackson and Loni Johnson as they capture the impact of misinformation and propaganda. You can check out the exhibit by heading over to 737 Lincoln Road.
I See You, Too is only the beginning for ReFrame. Festival-goers can also look forward to live dance, open mic performances, and photo installations. Best of all, all ReFrame events are free. See you there!

The Dolphin Awaits

The month of May is soon to come to an end, and you may be missing out on catching big dolphin! During May, you have greater chances of finding these fish without having to navigate too far offshore.
For clarification, we’re referring to the dolphin as in the fish versus the much-beloved mammal. These fish remain quite popular among anglers and they’re an exciting thrill to catch as they have a tendency to perform aerial acrobatics while they fight hard. They’re also easy to spot thanks to their brilliant colors of green, blue, and yellow.
Dolphin can be caught at just about any time of year but summer tends to be the period when they are most active. While no season exists on dolphin, do keep in mind that there is a daily bag limit of ten fish per person or sixty per boat. Dolphin must measure a minimum of twenty inches from the tip of its mouth to the fork of its tail.
Do you want to try your hand at catching dolphin this summer? Book a deep sea fishing trip today.

Place Your Bets on the 2019 Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby remains an extremely popular and truly exciting horse racing tradition in the United States. Held in Louisville on the first Saturday during the month May, the country’s “Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” takes place every year and has delighted people of all ages since 1875. It also holds the honor of being the most attended stakes race in the country. The Kentucky Derby represents the first in what’s called the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing which includes the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes race.
For those unaware of the Kentucky Derby tradition, three-year-old Thoroughbred horses compete on a dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs that extends one and one-quarter mile long. Colts and geldings race with 126 pounds while fillies lug 121 pounds. Over fifteen horses participate in the Derby, a number that’s significantly above the average for most horse races.
The 2019 Kentucky Derby is happening this Saturday, May 4th and the competing horses include War of Will, By My Standards, Tacitus, Code of Honor, and more. You are welcome to place bets on the horses even if you won’t be attending.

Blackfin Tuna Regulations May Be on the Way

The blackfin tuna is one of those fish that tends to be caught by accident. They can be found across all offshore waters of Florida, but the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has noticed some drop-off of catches in areas such as Miami and the Florida Keys. To tackle the situation, the FWC is hosting several workshops to receive angler feedback regarding the status of blackfin tuna. The results will then be evaluated by a governor-appointed commission most likely in July some time.
Until changes and regulations are implemented, blackfin tuna are currently regulated by Florida’s default recreational bag limit which allows a maximum of two fish per day, or 100 pounds, whichever is greater. There are currently no size limits in place. There are no federal regulations for blackfin tuna.
Of the “true tunas”, blackfin tuna are the smallest when compared to their massive cousins like the 900+ pound bluefin tuna. They share some similarities with skipjack tuna and the false albacore, which most Florida anglers may recognize as the bonito.

Miami Beach Seeks to Phase out Plastic

Plastic remains a major problem not only in South Florida, but also around the world. As efforts continue to try and tackle the environmental hazard, Miami Beach has launched its own initiative aimed at reducing the problem that often plagues the ocean.
Appropriately dubbed Plastic Free Miami Beach, the initiative seeks to cut down on the reliance to use plastic items that have a one-time use, such as straws for instance. One way to do that is to transition from plastic straws to paper straws. Other paper-based or non plastic products are also being proposed to cut down the usage of items like styrofoam carryout containers.
The initiative meeting was aimed largely at encouraging businesses to join the cause which seems it is being embraced with open arms. In fact, the popular spirits company Bacardi has already expressed its support.
Miami Beach already bans certain products, but this new initiative may go a long way in making the city a greener place while making Mother Nature happy.
