Get into the Fourth of July Mood at These Miami Beach Events

The days are warmer, longer, and there is (slightly) less traffic, all signs of summer in South Florida. While the season is officially here, it doesn’t really begin until after Independence Day. With that in mind, there are several different events going on to help you ring in the “official” start of the summer.
Tomorrow, 27 Restaurant & Bar on Indian Creek Drive is hosting the CLASSy Natural Wine Night where you can sip on various drinks at a discounted price. Try some drinks coming all the way from Italy or take a crash course in wine by attending the class which kicks off at 6:30 and costs just $15. The event itself is free.
Head over to RWSB on Collins Avenue the day before Independence Day to be a part of the summer barbecue kick off featuring food prepared by guest chefs Janine Booth and Jeff McInnis. The event begins at 6:30 and tickets are $40. Seating is limited so you may wish to consider purchasing in advance. Should there be enough space, walk-ins are welcome.

After Fishing, Go for Some Miami Ice Cream

Have you made any summer plans yet? Perhaps you’re thinking of ways to complement your cool deep sea fishing experience on the THERAPY-IV. If you plan on spending any time in the barrier island and are looking for other ways to stay cool in South Florida, consider exploring some of the Miami ice cream shops that offer a great for the whole family, much like a deep sea fishing trip.
We’ll begin with two spots just west of Miami Beach. MadLab Creamery on 39th Street has become known for its one of a kind ice creams that use toppings such as edible glitter, Japanese cheesecake, and more. The setting is ideal for sharing on social media.
Just north of MadLab Creamery on 41st Street is Aubi & Ramsa which offers something a little more adult-oriented. Try the Kentucky crème brulee infused with bourbon or perhaps the chocolate Aztec with Del Maguey Vida mezcal.
Unlike most ice cream places, Lulu’s Nitrogen Ice Cream in the Edgewater neighborhood makes its ice cream on the spot. Choose your flavor, your mix-ins, and then marvel as the ice cream is created right before your eyes courtesy of a little liquid nitrogen.

Set Sail for Miami’s New Reef

Are you eager to do any fishing in Key Biscayne any time soon? Avid anglers in South Florida will now have another option to choose from the next time they may be passing through the waters of Biscayne Bay. Miami-Dade County and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission have joined forces to reveal a new artificial reef made from more than 130 tons of limerock boulders and clean concrete.
Dubbed Bug Light Shoal, this all-new reef will assist with providing access and opportunities for anglers to catch bait before they venture off into offshore waters. If the name of the reef happens to sound somewhat familiar, it was the nickname given to Biscayne Bay’s decommissioned navigational marker which, for decades, was a haven for bait fish.
To reach Bug Light Shoal, you’ll need to head about 2.4 nautical miles east northeast of the Cape Florida Lighthouse towards a depth of 22 feet. The lighthouse is part of Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.

Tarpon Fishing in Miami

Among the many sea dwellers that prove to be a challenge, the tarpon is certainly among them. In fact, anglers can spend their entire lives perfecting their tarpon fishing technique due to the fish’s unpredictability and stubbornness.
Tarpon is known for its aerial acrobatics, but if you want to see it in action then it’s important to know when and where to look. Here in Miami, the fish is most active during the months of January through May, and they start to dwindle after July. Some spots where you may be able to catch them include Government Cut and Haulover Inlet.
Mullet and small crabs make for good tarpon bait, but runs of shrimp that often occur during the winter will certainly work. Tarpon feeds at all hours of the day, but if you’re intrepid enough to go fishing at night, the fish becomes less wary because it won’t be able to notice the fishing lines due to the darkness.
If you want to try catching tarpon, book your summer deep sea fishing trip on the THERAPY-IV today.

New Miami Beach restaurants seemingly open and close on a daily basis, but Lure Fishbar at Loews Hotel has welcomed customers for five years and counting, serving great seafood no matter what time of the year it is.
To celebrate its five year anniversary and the unofficial arrival of the summer, Lure Fishbar is switching up its menu and going from South Beach to New York’s trendy SoHo neighborhood for the next two months. For those of you that don’t plan on heading to one of the Miami Beach parties this Memorial Day weekend, there is another event you may wish to consider visiting that doesn’t involve too many raucous crowds. The city’s first arts and cultural festival begins today and continues this weekend.
Dubbed ReFrame, the festival will provide a showcase of various artwork by local artists, with a common thread of discussing and sparking conversation on hot topics like relationships, inclusion, and more.

The Dolphin Awaits

The month of May is soon to come to an end, and you may be missing out on catching big dolphin! During May, you have greater chances of finding these fish without having to navigate too far offshore.
For clarification, we’re referring to the dolphin as in the fish versus the much-beloved mammal. These fish remain quite popular among anglers and they’re an exciting thrill to catch as they have a tendency to perform aerial acrobatics while they fight hard. They’re also easy to spot thanks to their brilliant colors of green, blue, and yellow.
Dolphin can be caught at just about any time of year but summer tends to be the period when they are most active. While no season exists on dolphin, do keep in mind that there is a daily bag limit of ten fish per person or sixty per boat. Dolphin must measure a minimum of twenty inches from the tip of its mouth to the fork of its tail.
Do you want to try your hand at catching dolphin this summer? Book a deep sea fishing trip today.

Place Your Bets on the 2019 Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby remains an extremely popular and truly exciting horse racing tradition in the United States. Held in Louisville on the first Saturday during the month May, the country’s “Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” takes place every year and has delighted people of all ages since 1875. It also holds the honor of being the most attended stakes race in the country. The Kentucky Derby represents the first in what’s called the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing which includes the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes race.
For those unaware of the Kentucky Derby tradition, three-year-old Thoroughbred horses compete on a dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs that extends one and one-quarter mile long. Colts and geldings race with 126 pounds while fillies lug 121 pounds. Over fifteen horses participate in the Derby, a number that’s significantly above the average for most horse races.
The 2019 Kentucky Derby is happening this Saturday, May 4th and the competing horses include War of Will, By My Standards, Tacitus, Code of Honor, and more. You are welcome to place bets on the horses even if you won’t be attending.

Blackfin Tuna Regulations May Be on the Way

The blackfin tuna is one of those fish that tends to be caught by accident. They can be found across all offshore waters of Florida, but the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has noticed some drop-off of catches in areas such as Miami and the Florida Keys. To tackle the situation, the FWC is hosting several workshops to receive angler feedback regarding the status of blackfin tuna. The results will then be evaluated by a governor-appointed commission most likely in July some time.
Until changes and regulations are implemented, blackfin tuna are currently regulated by Florida’s default recreational bag limit which allows a maximum of two fish per day, or 100 pounds, whichever is greater. There are currently no size limits in place. There are no federal regulations for blackfin tuna.
Of the “true tunas”, blackfin tuna are the smallest when compared to their massive cousins like the 900+ pound bluefin tuna. They share some similarities with skipjack tuna and the false albacore, which most Florida anglers may recognize as the bonito.

Miami Beach Seeks to Phase out Plastic

Plastic remains a major problem not only in South Florida, but also around the world. As efforts continue to try and tackle the environmental hazard, Miami Beach has launched its own initiative aimed at reducing the problem that often plagues the ocean.
Appropriately dubbed Plastic Free Miami Beach, the initiative seeks to cut down on the reliance to use plastic items that have a one-time use, such as straws for instance. One way to do that is to transition from plastic straws to paper straws. Other paper-based or non plastic products are also being proposed to cut down the usage of items like styrofoam carryout containers.
The initiative meeting was aimed largely at encouraging businesses to join the cause which seems it is being embraced with open arms. In fact, the popular spirits company Bacardi has already expressed its support.
Miami Beach already bans certain products, but this new initiative may go a long way in making the city a greener place while making Mother Nature happy.

Have You Been to the Faena Bazaar?

Lincoln Road may be the shopping destination of Miami Beach, but the city isn’t really known for its retail. That all changed in 2018 with the debut of the Faena Bazaar, one of the latest additions to the growing Faena District. Named after hotelier Alan Faena, the Faena District currently features a pair of hotels, residences, various cultural restaurants, and of course, plenty of highly regarded restaurants.
With the Faena Bazaar, visitors can shop at several internationally recognized boutiques such as luxury eyewear store Linda Farrow, the Spain-made shoes of Pedro Garcia, and Hartel, a collection of menswear. While it showcases lots of different shopping venues, Faena Bazaar also has a gallery with various exhibitions on the floors below the shops. If that’s not enough, the rooftop is home to the Goldish Oasis, a place to enjoy sound healing and sip organic juices. Ultra Returns with Some Ridesharing Restrictions

Ultra is moving from its longtime home of Bayfront Park to Virginia Key for the first time this weekend. More than 50,000 people are expected to show up to the three-day festival, and city officials are working hard to ensure that traffic on the Rickenbacker Causeway flows smoothly.
For those that may not know, the Rickenbacker Causeway is the one road that connects the Miami mainland to Virginia Key. To reduce the chances of traffic snarls, ridesharing services such as Lyft and Uber have made it known that passengers will not be picked up at Virginia Key during the Ultra Musical Festival. For anyone that intends to use ridesharing, they will need to ride one of the three shuttles transporting them to the following locations: Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, the former home of the Miami Herald near Omni, or the American Airlines Arena. It is only at these locations that people can be picked up via Uber or Lyft.
Although Uber and Lyft have made their pickup policy clear, passengers can still be dropped off at Virginia Key. While Uber won’t have any drop-off restrictions, Lyft will cease drop-offs beginning at 10:30 pm until 6 am. Residents of Key Biscayne residents can also request vehicles from either service.

Miami Beach’s Spring Break Changes Remain in Effect This Weekend

For those of you that visited Miami Beach this past weekend, you may have noticed some changes in regards to the roads and traffic patterns. As a means of tackling the massive numbers of college students that visit the barrier island for spring break, the city has some changes in place to keep things orderly.
As was the case last weekend, this weekend visitors will notice some closures. For starters, Ocean Drive between 5th and 12th Streets will be closed after a certain time. The MacArthur and Julia Tuttle Causeway will only have a pair of lanes moving, so you may be better off taking advantage of either the 79th Street Causeway or the Venetian Causeway.
For those that are planning on using scooters to get around, the city is now able to disable scooters to reduce the chances of any reckless scooter drivers. On an unrelated note: also remember that certain roads around the city will be accessible only to residents of Miami Beach or employees of businesses on the barrier island.

Miami Beach’s Rules for Spring Break

Will you be heading to Miami Beach for spring break? Welcome! The barrier island is one of the best places to spend spring break. If you haven’t read up on the latest rules about visiting the beach, there are a couple of things you may wish to be aware of.
For starters, drinking alcohol on the beach is prohibited. Visitors that are planning to spend the day sunbathing should also be aware that tents, coolers, tables, and inflatable devices are also off-limits and will not be allowed on the beach. Depending on the section, the city may also enforce occupancy limits. Should these areas reach their capacity, visitors will not be allowed to enter that area.
In the past, Miami Beach has closed off Ocean Drive to deal with traffic and improve pedestrian safety. This year is no exception. During peak hours, the popular roadway may be closed entirely or a portion of it may be closed between 12thand 5thStreet. There will also be limits on the streets visitors can access, which may be open only to Miami Beach residents or employees and patrons of local businesses.

Useful Tips for a Deep Sea Fishing Day

No matter your familiarity with deep sea fishing, there is always room for learning something new about deep sea fishing. Whether you’ve never picked up a fishing rod in your life or you’re looking for ways to improve, here are a couple of tips worth considering.
Vary the lures. If you’re fishing in saltwater, it’s going to prove trickier to grab the attention of a fish due to the lower visibility. Try and get into the habit of utilizing lures that emphasize bright colors as these are likelier to be noticed by various species of fish, potentially improving your odds of a catch.
Practice patience. This one is aimed at beginners. If the fish aren’t biting right away, resist the temptation to immediately move somewhere else. With big game fish, it may take time before there is any activity. Sometimes sticking around is better.
Look for other animals. Do you see a bunch of seagulls swooping down into the ocean? This could be a sign that there are game fish lurking nearby. If you see lots of feeding activity, there are strong odds some fish are in the area.

The Fascinating History Behind President’s Day

On Monday, the country will once again observe President’s Day, a federal holiday. The holiday is typically celebrated on the third Monday of February and is intended to honor the first man to serve as President of the United States: George Washington. Ever since Congress spearheaded the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, President’s Day has been observed between the 15th and 21st.
A fun fact of President’s Day is in its name. “President’s Day” is actually the colloquial name for the holiday, with the official name of it being, appropriately, Washington’s Birthday. Though it’s intended to honor Washington, the holiday has since come to serve as something of an occasion to honor current and former individuals that have served as president. Furthermore, the name of the holiday varies in different states, being also known as Presidents' Day or Washington's and Lincoln's Birthday.
A famous legend about George Washington was when he chopped down his father’s cherry tree as a child after being gifted a hatchet. When his father confronted him, young George admitted it, uttering his now famous line, “I cannot tell a lie.” As a result of this story, cherry pie is a popular food consumed on President’s Day.
