Are You Ready for the Daytona 500?

Start revving up your engines! The Daytona 500 is returning once again next month for the 61st time, bringing its longtime tradition of incredible finishes, nail-biting performances, and of course plenty of speed, determination, and skill.
In case you’ve never experienced what the Daytona 500 is all about or happen to be young, it consists of a 500-mile long race held each year at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. It remains the most important and prestigious race on the NASCAR calendar and it continues to carry the largest purse.
This year’s Daytona 500 will see professional stock car racing driver Austin “The Ace” Dillon return to defend his 2018 win. Dillon won the NASCAR Rookie of the Year in the Truck Series back in 2010 and he is the current record holder when it comes to the most consecutive poles in the Nationwide Series with four.
The Daytona 500 has sold out the past three years, so make sure you get your tickets in time for the big event on Sunday, February 17th.

The Wounded Warriors Ride

Did you notice an extra number of people biking through South Florida this past weekend? You may have caught a glimpse of the fifty veterans participating in the Wounded Warriors ride. This four-day ride is spearheaded by the Wounded Warriors Project, a charity that provides various events, programs, and services to veterans ever since the events of September 11, 2001. The organization has assisted over 70,000 people.
Last week, the riders gathered to be outfitted with their cycling gear that takes into account their injuries so that the ride remains as comfortable as it possibly can be. These veterans are men and women from all around the world. One participant, for example, served for more than five years before an injury she sustained required amputating her lower leg. Rides like this one go a long way in helping these veterans enjoy a lifestyle that’s as close to normal as possible while also reminding them they are doing the best they can regardless of the circumstances.
The Wounded Warriors ride began right here in Miami Beach and will continue until the riders make it all the way to Key West.

Florida Seeks to Control Shark Fishing

Are you someone that enjoys shark fishing? If so, you may or may not have heard the news late last year regarding shark fishing. For those of you that use chum to draw the attention of sharks, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is placing some potential restrictions.

In an effort to reduce what’s called “blue collar” angling, shark fishers will notice chumming restrictions as well as new requirements mandating that people who go casting for sharks each year must obtain a permit that can be obtained via an online educational program. This permit would not be required for people below the age of sixteen or over the age of 65.

The new changes and requirements are a way to find a halfway point for people that use state waters as well as anglers. It is also intended to assist the commission with obtaining more information regarding the number of people that participate in land-based shark fishing.

Have Some Post New Year’s Fun This Week

Happy New Year, everyone! We hope you take some time this year to enjoy the seas and discover the joy of deep sea fishing in 2019. For many of us, it’s a short week after the New Year’s celebrations, but there is still plenty to do in and around Miami for what’s left of this week. Here are a few highlights.
Tomorrow, Wharf Miami is hosting the Riverside Circus. True to its name, the entire family can enjoy acrobats, magicians, jugglers, and many more performers right by the water as musical acts like Hushmoney and Kid Nemesis spin great tunes. Best of all, there is no cost to attend the circus.
Remember the popular MTV show Jackass? If so, you may remember Steve-O as being among the most daredevil of the crew. Steve-O is bringing his Bucket List Tour to the 305 with an appearance at Miami Improv Comedy in Doral this Friday and Saturday. Tickets start at just $25.
On Saturday, head over to the Art Deco Welcome Center in Miami Beach by 11 am to check out the South Beach Scandals Tour which provides a unique take on the barrier island’s rich and quite colorful history. Tickets are only $25.
