Tomorrow, the country will once again welcome the arrival of Groundhog Day. A tradition that began in 1887, the day has developed quite the following as hundreds of thousands of people come together to observe as the groundhog emerges from its burrow to find out whether the winter season will be sticking around or if spring is right around the corner. Should dark clouds be present, then spring is soon to arrive. If the sun is shining and the groundhog sees its shadow, then the polar vortex may not be going anywhere for another six weeks.
Groundhog Day maintains a strong fanbase in southeastern Pennsylvania and it is considered a very important day. To celebrate, “Groundhog Lodges” are established to celebrate the holiday with social events dubbed “fersommlinge” which have food and may also incorporate skits or plays, speeches and more. A dialect of Pennsylvania German dialect is the official event language and it must be spoken at all times. Anyone who is caught speaking a word in a different language such as English must pay a small penalty.
The borough of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is where Groundhog Day is celebrated in the greatest numbers and it is also where the famous Punxsutawney Phil groundhog resides.
