The Kentucky Derby remains an extremely popular and truly exciting horse racing tradition in the United States. Held in Louisville on the first Saturday during the month May, the country’s “Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” takes place every year and has delighted people of all ages since 1875. It also holds the honor of being the most attended stakes race in the country. The Kentucky Derby represents the first in what’s called the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing which includes the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes race.
For those unaware of the Kentucky Derby tradition, three-year-old Thoroughbred horses compete on a dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs that extends one and one-quarter mile long. Colts and geldings race with 126 pounds while fillies lug 121 pounds. Over fifteen horses participate in the Derby, a number that’s significantly above the average for most horse races.
The 2019 Kentucky Derby is happening this Saturday, May 4th and the competing horses include War of Will, By My Standards, Tacitus, Code of Honor, and more. You are welcome to place bets on the horses even if you won’t be attending.
