Remembering an Epochal Photo in American History

Last Sunday marked the 75th anniversary of one of the most iconic images in the United States: Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, shot by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Joe Rosenthal. The image which depicts a group of six marines raising the flag atop Mount Suribachi became a symbol of the Marine Corps while also serving as a reminder of the lives lost during World War II.
When the photo was shot on February 23, 1945, Iwo Jima had seen bloodshed for five days, as the United States, as well as Japan, suffered many casualties. By the time the war was over, over 25,000 lives had been collectively lost during the 36 days of the conflict.
Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima appeared on numerous newspapers throughout the United States shortly after it was shot. The photo earned such fame, it became the centerpiece of a prosperous war bonds campaign that included the six members of the service claimed to have snapped in the photo. Those men have since been identified and have rightfully earned their place in history.

We’re Revved up for the Daytona 500

It’s time to start warming up those engines! After a delay to weather conditions, the 2020 Daytona 500 is having its season opener today for the 62nd time, continuing its extensive tradition of delivering unbelievable finishes, tense races, and more than plenty of speed and impeccable driving skills.
For those that may be unfamiliar with what Daytona 500, the competition is centered around a 500-mile long race that takes place annually at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. The race remains the most important and prestigious event on the NASCAR schedule and holds the biggest purse.
This year’s Daytona 500 will see professional stock car racing driver Austin “The Ace” Dillon return to defend his 2018 win. Dillon won the NASCAR Rookie of the Year in the Truck Series back in 2010 and he is the current record holder when it comes to the most consecutive poles in the Nationwide Series with four.
The 2020 Daytona 500 has already generated headlines after the President of the United States (who serves as the grand marshal of the race) became just the second president in the history of the Daytona 500 to utter the iconic line commanding the drivers to start their engines.

What Are You Doing This President’s Day Weekend?

Next Monday, the United States will be observing the federal holiday we all know better as President’s Day. Usually, the holiday is observed on the third Monday of February and is meant to commemorate the first man to serve as US President: George Washington. Since the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was enacted by Congress, the 15th through the 21st is the typical “window” when the holiday is celebrated.
There’s an interesting fact or two regarding the name of the holiday. “President’s Day” isn’t the “real” name of the holiday, it’s Washington’s Birthday. While Washington is supposed to be celebrated, the holiday has since come to serve as a way to celebrate presidents of the past and present. The holiday's name may vary depending on the state. In some cases, it also goes by Washington's and Lincoln's Birthday.
A popular legend about George Washington was when, after being given a hatchet, he cut down his father's cherry as a boy. Once his father confronted him, it was confirmed by young George who uttered his now-famous line, "I can't tell a lie." As a result of this incident, cherry pie is a popular food eaten on President's Day.
