For avid tennis fans, one of the most anticipated events is the Wimbledon tennis tournament. For those of us here in Miami, there is also the Miami Open, a tennis tournament also known as the Miami Masters.
The Miami Open initially started as a potential idea during the 1960s when major names like Jack Kramer, Earl Henry “Butch” Buchholz, and Pancho Gonzalez used a station wagon to get around and play at various fairgrounds. It was Buchholz who decided to devise a two-week players tournament, which would come to be known as “Winter Wimbledon”. After spending some time working to make Winter Wimbledon a reality, a world-class tennis tournament finally came to see the light of day on February 4, 1985, featuring some of the most widely acclaimed and respected names in the sport of tennis.
The 2020 Miami Open is taking place at Hard Rock Rock Stadium on March 23rd through April 5th. Grand Slam record-holder Serena Williams will bring her legendary athleticism to the tournament which will also include Sofia Kenin and Novak Djokovic, the current Australian Open champions.
