The Kentucky Derby continues its reign as perhaps the top event involving the excitement and longtime tradition of horse racing in the United States. Taking place in Louisville on the first Saturday of May, the country's "Fastest Two Minutes in Sports" happens annually and since 1875 has attracted a broad audience, from kids to adults. Decades later, it is still the most-attended stakes race in the world and is the first event comprising the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, which includes the races known as Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
For those unaware of the history of Kentucky Derby, three-year-old Thoroughbred horses compete on a dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs that spans one and a quarter-mile wide. Colts and gelding race with 126 pounds, while 121 pounds are given to fillies. About fifteen horses compete in the Derby, a figure that for most horse races is significantly above average.
The 146th Kentucky Derby is happening on Saturday, May 2nd and the competing horses include Storm the Court, Ete Indien, Silver Prospector, Modernist, and more. You can place bets on the horses even if cannot attend the event.
