Boating in Miami-Dade

Even as Miami-Dade moves to potentially open up restaurants and possibly other businesses, several protocols remain in place that you may wish to be aware of, if you are already. These protocols are aimed at keeping anyone and everyone in boating or boating-related activities safe.

Boat ramps, for example, are open from 6 am to 8 pm every day and only one boat is allowed per ramp at a time. While on shore, face masks are required and must remain on until the vessel has left the dock upon being fully loaded.

When it’s time to clean the fish, only a single person is allowed to be at the station and the station should be cleaned and disinfected following its use. During this process, it’s expected to maintain social distancing.

As for charter boats like THERAPY-IV, the captain, as well as the crew and any patrons, are required to wear face masks and maintain social distancing whether they are on shore or on the vessel.

The Rise of Blackfin and Kingfish

As Florida’s weather gets warmer along with the water, there may be a greater presence of kingfish and blackfin tuna activity. Blackfin tuna is usually best captured by live chumming (sardines are easy to procure and make a perfect blackfin bait). During the early hours of the morning and the evening are ideal for going blackfin tuna fishing on a charter boat.
Blackfin are brawny aquatic warriors, and when they try to swim down to escape you can expect a longer battle time.
Kingfish is Florida's largest mackerel variety and typically weighs about 20 pounds. They can grow up to six feet long though, and weigh 100 pounds. Since the water does tend to hover somewhere around 68 degrees Fahrenheit, the fish tends to hang out in Florida’s water all year long.
Kingfish also begin migrating north in the spring, much like blackfin tuna and migrate back in the autumn months. Kingfish prefer swimming in the vicinity of shipwrecks, reefs, and oil platforms, as that’s largely where the baitfish (sardines and herring) they feed on tend to dwell. Another way to find them is to search out birds that dive and capture fish on the water.

Stay Active While Social Distancing

Your health is a top priority and if you’re the active type, it may be tough to figure out ways to stay active while still social distancing. While the following suggestions may not replace the thrill of deep sea fishing on the water of South Florida, they can at least keep the body or mind moving in the meantime.
Should you have a yard, make use of it. Even if it’s something as simple as sitting outdoors alone in your yard when it’s sunny, the fresh air can ease the mind and the sunlight will nourish the body with vitamin D. You may also wish to consider firing up a workout video and enjoying it outdoors.
There is a saying that goes something along the lines of “an idle mind is the devil’s playground”. Give the brain the workout it needs by doing activities that involve using some brainpower. This can be something as simple as a crossword or a jigsaw puzzle.

The Colorful Tilefish

While you remain safely indoors, we’re continuing our look at more of the various fish roaming the waters of South Florida. This time, the spotlight is on the tilefish.
Tilefish tend to dwell in the coastal waters of Miami and Miami Beach and typically consist of golden tilefish and gray tilefish. Golden tilefish are also called big Northern tilefish. Far and away the "silver tiles" or silver tilefish are the most colorful tilefish in offshore fishing areas in South Florida. Golden tilefish are attractively colored, and almost appear to illuminate below the surface. When they are in the water with shades of black, blue and white, they tend to have exquisite neon colors, and often have spots in gold and yellow. Gold tilefish also have lovely, gorgeously iridescent colors.
As loners of sorts, tilefish prefer to stick to the bottom. They have sharp eyesight that helps with catching prey. When they are being preyed upon, they are also able to rapidly dive into their self-made retreats. Furthermore, tilefish like the chameleon sand tilefish can go as far as changing its colors to confuse its pursuers.

The Distinctive White Marlin

The white marlin is one of the several sea dwellers belonging to the “billfishes” group. These fish are easily identifiable by their distinctively long and sharp upper jaw, also known as a bill. The white marlin’s body is also distinctive, being dark blue above and a silvery-white of sorts on the bottom. They are often misconstrued as being roundscale spearfish but this an incorrect identification as white marlin has, among other differentiating features, a more rigid scale.
With their size and unique bill, the white marlin has the pleasure of being near the top of the food chain. It will take on any prey that is manageable based on the fish’s weight, including mahi-mahi, squid, and flying fish. They are also known to join forces with other predators to forage for food. However, the white marlin is typically a loner.
Should you hook a white marlin, expect a fierce fight. The fish will leap out of the water and whip its tail around. Its sharp bill can also prove dangerous.
