Concern Rises About Suffering Marine Life in Florida

During the past weeks, Florida residents have noticed dead marine life along the shores of Florida waters.

The sightings of the dead have grabbed the attention of researchers and specialists to depict why marine life is suffering.

One factor that may have contributed to this situation is the low dissolved oxygen levels. As the summer heat leads to warmer water the less oxygen it holds.

The combination of blooming algae and pollution is another factor causing marine life to suffer. Algae consume oxygen as they die, and while decomposing can create dead zones.

The decaying fish on our coast is not only affecting ecosystems but it can lead to further potential damage. Bacteria can compound, causing more fish to die and predators such as birds can also suffer from the contamination. Not to mention the fact that it can also cause extreme contamination on our beaches.

Newly installed pumps are being used to try and prevent further dead marine life. The pumps or aerators allow for better oxygen flow in the water.

The struggling marine life has left residents concerned and some claim they cannot ignore the smell coming from the water.

Researchers have gathered every day to help stop increased rates of death, and have noted there has been a slight positive change. But the concern of larger marine life suffering is still present.

Florida Sea Turtles Receive Protection

Green sea turtles with their nesting beaches right here in Florida are receiving some federal help following a recent legal agreement also involving conservation groups. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service will be required to assign protected vital habitats for green sea turtles by the end of June 2023.

Due to the agreement, the agencies would possibly propose offering protections for beaches where green turtles are breeding in Florida, coastal oceanic areas in the Southeast and on the West Coast, as well as other states like Georgia and the two Carolinas. Such designations of critical habitats do not preclude construction, but they ensure that any project approved by a federal agency will mitigate harm to those protected areas.

Due to reasons like poaching, vessel strikes, and habitat destruction, green sea turtle populations around the world are threatened. Global warming and increasing sea levels, as well as increased emissions, make breeding in certain areas more difficult for these turtles, which has prompted conservation groups to advocate for greater protections.

Understanding Puffer Fish

Often referred to as a blowfish, the puffer fish can be found in both tropical and subtropical waters and at times even freshwater.

Famous for their ability to inflate underwater, the pufferfish is a fish of many impressive traits. There are over 120 species of puffer fish, their tapered bodies and bulbous heads are some of their most well-known physical features.

The fish inflates itself as a defense mechanism towards predators. Once their bodies are inflated the fish appears to be up to three times its size. At times the puffer fish will be covered in spines making it harder for predators to bite down on them.

The way this fish expands is similar to the way humans can push out their stomachs without rupturing.

Other than having the fascinating ability to blow up under water, this isn’t the puffer fish’s only defense mechanism. The fish can also be very poisonous if eaten, to both humans and other animals.

Studies have revealed that puffer fish caught in Florida contain toxic substances such as tetrodotoxin. This substance can cause severe illness when consumed. Symptoms of the poisoning include: a tingling or numb feeling in the tongue, fingertips, face, and arms, vomiting, incoherent speech, and can even affect one's breathing. The toxin can also be deadly if consumed.

The toxin cannot be detected when present in the fish, there is no smell to it and it cannot be cleaned off the fish. Apart from the horrible side effects of the toxin there is no current antidote for tetrodotoxin.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation has banned the harvest of some puffer fish species in some areas throughout Florida.

Enjoy Labor Day Weekend on the Water

Labor Day is just a few weeks away and you may be thinking of ways to safely enjoy the holiday. If you have yet to make any plans, a deep sea fishing boat experience may be a fun, memorable way to spend it. Let’s explore why.

Chances are you’ve noticed how hot and steamy South Florida weather has been lately. If you’re planning on doing something like a barbecue with your closest loved ones, you may find the weather to be a little too unbearable. The open water is a great option where you may feel a tad cooler.

Speaking of barbecue, you may notice the waters will be less occupied with boats as more people spend it grilling up food. This means the most active fishing spots may see less activity, upping your chances of catching some incredible sea dwellers.

Remember that a deep sea fishing trip is something every member of the family can enjoy, from children to adults. A trip on the water may be just the thing to help you energize and keep the little ones entertained.

What Is Red Tide?

When thinking about your day at the beach you think about soaking up the hot sun, taking a swim in the water, the nice breeze that hits your skin and all the wonderful factors going to the beach entails. Now, how disappointing would it be if you go to the beach and bathing in the ocean is off-limits?

Although not common, at times there are some reasons why the ocean may be off-limits. Whether it be more severe cases like storms or hurricanes there is one more natural “disaster” that may keep you from wanting to take a swim: red tide.

Red tide is caused due to high concentration of microscopic algae. Karenia Brevis is the cause of most red tides in Florida. The organisms produce toxins that lead to the water discoloration. Though it is called “red tide” the water can also appear greenish-brown and at times even purple, in some cases you will not see any changes in the water color.

These conditions can last anywhere from a couple of days to months, depending on the wind.

Swimming in the ocean while there is a red tide contamination is not completely unsafe but you may not want to for the following reasons. The contamination in the water may cause skin irritations, and a burning eye sensation. You may also come face to face with a dead fish or two.

Fish and other vertebrates tend to die in the water while there's red tide because the toxins Karena Brevis releases attacks their central nervous system.

Though commercial seafood from local grocery stores and restaurants is safe, one should refrain from fishing during this contamination to be safe. Crabs and shrimp are safe to harvest because the toxins are not absorbed in the edible tissues of these species.

One can still enjoy the beach during red tides! Dead fish may not always be present and the severity of contamination varies. It is important to be aware that the red tide is one of Mother Nature's gifts to us and how to proceed with it. If you are planning a trip to Florida in hopes to enjoy the beach or booking any water sport activities just make sure there is no current contamination to get the most out of your experience.

Protect the Eyes While Fishing with the Right Sunglasses

On a deep sea fishing trip, the eyes need to shield themselves from the sun's blinding rays. The glare from the rays as they bounce off the water 's surface can impair your vision, or make it more difficult to spot and reel fish.

Once you’ve determined the sunglasses that are suitable for you, you may want to think, for example, what kind of fish you plan to catch, such as grouper or mackerel for instance. Don’t forget to take a moment to test the color of the lens and its material. For example, some feature a special layer with polarized sunglasses which can block most refracted sunlight. For those lenses, rays that bounce off the water's surface do not cause huge glare when you gaze into the ocean to find a fish or enjoy the natural views. Blue lenses are a safe bet for fishing at deep sea. Blue color of the outer lens combined with a gray inner lens would be suitable for the majority of anglers.

In regards to fishing sunglasses, fight the temptation to purchase them online. Polarized sunglasses must be comfortable and conform correctly to the face. You don't want light to spill into your field of view which is undermining the intent of purchasing polarized glasses. The better the facial fit of the sunglasses, the better the vision. As a result, you can find that catching big game fish isn't as hard.

All About Barracudas

Barracudas have gained the reputation of being an aggressive and dangerous fish. Since we share the same waters they reside on, it's not uncommon one may spot one while on a trip to the beach.
The fish is commonly found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans as well as the Red seas and Carribean Ocean.
Its threatening teeth and torpedo shaped body may alarm swimmers, but they are not as dangerous as one may think.
Barracudas are skilled predators but are not interested in attacking divers. Most attacks on humans occur when the fish feels it is threatened or when a metallic object is mistaken for food. Because of this, the fish has brought hysteria to some beach goers.
Barracudas hunt by scanning the water in search of prey relaying on their sight. Oftentimes smaller fish may reflect in the water appearing like metal objects, indicating their next meal. The vicious predator prefers to feed on small tuna, groupers, snapper, killifishes, anchovies, and grunts.
The easily recognizable fish is usually silver in color and has a long lean body. They have razor sharp teeth and a big mouth. They are fast swimmers and can grow up to 6 feet long in some cases.
To avoid a mistaken attack from a barracuda, or to simply feel more at peace while sharing the ocean with these intimidating creatures, it's best to remove any items that are high in shine, or any metals you may not need while taking a swim.

A Brief Introduction to Biscayne Bay

When you decide it’s time to try some summer inshore fishing, Biscayne Bay in Miami is ready to welcome you to its sparkling waters. Complemented by the Miami and Miami Beach flashiness and glamour, the always active bay offers world-class fishing, and its popularity spans decades.
Biscayne Bay extends from North Miami and continues to Key Largo, consisting of close to 430 square miles of water, somewhat approaching the size of the city of San Antonio! A number of acres of the bay remain under the preservation of Biscayne National Park, which came to fruition during the 1980s.
In the deeper areas of Biscayne Bay, several distinct gamefish that have gained a degree of prominence. Bonefish, tarpon, snapper, mackerel, sharks, and even grouper can be found dwelling in the depths of the cerulean waters. Anglers may find it difficult to focus their attention on a specific species because of the richly diverse variety of fish.
For those wishing to explore Biscayne Bay, THERAPY-IV welcomes you to try a deep sea fishing experience.
